So i've just bought the above for some video and sound editing, and also to try out a mac, as i'v not used since i was a child. I've read through some of the stickies, and picked up a few helpfull tips. What im mainly looking for is program alternatives to what i use in windows. I think there is a VLC for mac, but what about multi IM clients like pidgin? Whats a half decent irc client, or can i get putty too ? And a torrent client, im guessing all the big players have a mac version. And this bootcamp malarky, is it a simplified version of dual boot on a windows machine? Does the install happen from within the OS ?

Adium is chat client that I use. Works very well... although struggles with facebook... but I'd say that's more down to facebook.

uTorrent is now available for OSX as well.

Haven't used bootcamp for a while since my hard drive died. But yes. It just gives you an option at start up to as to which OS you want to boot into. There's a boot camp assistant program in the Utilities folder in you Applications folder. It will prepare your drive for installing windows.

Why use putty when you have a real terminal. Remember that Mac OS is unix based :) Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal

Lots of people like Transmission, it's simple and lightweight and it works.

Bootcamp is included with OS. It basically allows you to dual boot. If you don't want the hassle/delay of rebooting to switch OS, consider running Windows as a VM using something like Parallels.

Can't answer all your questions but can try a few.

Best bittorrent client I have used for my Mac OSX10.4 is Transmission. Very easy to use. I often have problems though with updates to Transmission (causing the application to fail to launch) so I tend to turn them off as in the past I have had to downgrade.

VLC is available for the Mac and works a treat.

To operate Windows, I used Parallels Desktop which I found to be way too processor-consuming on my machine. Consequently, I gave up using and my $300 copy of Vista has pretty much gone to waste.

For IM clients, try using Jabber in iChat.

to try out virtualization you can also run virtualbox from sun which is free

I haven't run windows VM in it but have a few linux ones going and all seems fine
