Unlocked USB modem, possible to use?

I have an unlocked Huawei USB modem but i'm told by service providers that I have to buy their modem to use the net. I've used this modem in several countries by just popping in a local sim and adjusting the settings. What sim can I use here and what are the username and password and other settings?

    Thanks,
    Marcus.
