Am I alone in thinking that RTE's arts programming is at best confusing, and at worst a shambles?

It certainly gives the impression of being deeply insecure and unsure of itself.

From the listener's point of view, it is hard to know where to listen and what to expect next.

In the last few months we've had The Arts Show, Arts Tonight and Arena. Pick a name, any name.

In yesterday's radio listings in the Irish Times Weekend magazine (p. 43) last night's Arts Tonight programme was highlighted as containing an interview with Alex Ross, the music critic of the New Yorker. This isn't what was broadcast. Checking the Arts Tonight website, it appears that this interview was broadcast on December 28. While accepting that this may be the fault of the IT, it hardly inspires confidence. The website makes no mention of last night's programme at all!

Why can't RTE create an arts strand that we can all rely on? BBC Radio 4's Front Row is set in stone now. It's only 30 minutes long, but it's extremely well researched and edited.

    D.

ps. Don't get me started on RTE filling in gaps on a speech channel (or what *should* be a speech channel) by the utterly vaccuous spinning of CDs. Maxi, Ronan Collins, John Creedon and Lillian Smith (about three hours a day between them) have no place on Radio 1. That we subsidize this rubbish through a licence fee is a scandal.
