    Anyone seen this before?

PS3 is not seeing any discs - DVD or Blu-Ray...

However, if someone invites me to play a game (Modern Warfare 2) I can start the game by accepting the invite...

Off to Sony or a DIY job?

It sounds like a software issue to me, since the laser must be working if you're able to play discs through the invite system.

If I were you I'd try a system restore. Google it, there are plenty of step-by-step instructions to doing it, and it requires no technical know-how. Just make sure you back everything up before doing so.

If that doesn't work it's most likely a hardware issue, in which case, assuming you don't know how to fix it yourself, you can send it off to Sony, or take it to a console repair shop, who will most likely fix it at a lesser cost.
