Hi, Sorry this is a long post.

I work for a large multinational insurance company in their New Business department.

I'm a bit worried lately, they have stopped selling some of our major products, greatly reducing our work load going into 2010.

It looks like it may be time to jump ship, as we have way too many staff at the moment for the volume of work. Nothing has been said yet, but with the cut of our major products and nothing new coming in the pipeline, it's fairly obvious we all won't be needed for much longer.

I've expressed the concern to my manager, who was a bit vague, but has more or less confirmed my concerns above.

Now, I am one of the lucky ones. I've done a HDIP in college funded by my employer, and I have also been lucky enough to work closely with some of the IT departments here in the company. While I have only been job shadowing to an extent, I've been learning loads and have shown my interest in moving into a junior IT role, should one arise. I'd be ahead of others in my area when it comes to moving into IT, due to actively seeking to learn with them and getting to know some of the hiring managers there. Everyone knows I want to move and I've had very positive feedback.

My question for you is, do you think I should hold out in my current job for one of these junior roles to come up? I've heard rumours from the departments I've worked with that there may be roles this year, (May being the operative word there :pac:) or should I begin looking outside the company as well?

I really don't want to leave, but I'm thinking I shouldn't put all my eggs in one basket. Would it be wise to actively seek employment elsewhere, or might it hamper my opportunities within the company?

    Any thoughts appreciated, thanks

Well there aren't many jobs out there at the moment, but there's no harm in looking. If something good comes up, and you're offered a job, great.

Don't give your notice until you find something though.

Also bear in mind that if you choose to leave you won't be entitled to redundancy. This possible is only a concern if you are there a long time. Maybe you should hold out and be learning some more IT skill in your spare time or do and evening course while you still have cash to pay for one.
