So, when do you do it?
Was listening to FM104 today, and they reckon if you don't have them down by the 6th you'll have bad luck for the year!
However, I always thought it was the 7th.
My friends all say it's the 8th?

It's my first year doing the whole tree thing alone and I don't want to be cursed for the year, so help me out here!:D

I take them down on the 6th.
Sure isn't the 6th called Little Christmas.

After that you don't really want to be looking at them anymore.

Well that doesn't apply to me.

I have a green a black and a white Christmas tree, so I like to vary when I put each one up.:pac:

I do love putting up a different colour tree every year.:o

Pentecost is at Easter ya eejit, January 6th is the Epiphany, the 12th day of Christmas, that's when you take down the decorations and the tree and burn them as an offering to appease Santa, don't ye Catholic's know anything?!

Took ours down on the 2nd. Once New Years is over I don't see the point of having it up. I hate taking it down though, something sad about doing it :(

Don't have a tree and haven't had for the past two years. When I say humbug I mean it and I stand by it. Silly Christians and your trees.

Where did I get have a tree/decorations up 7 days either side of Christmas day?

I thought it was something to do with the crib that was connected with January 6.

Last night.. it took 20 minutes!

    Result!

PS - But came home after New Year's night-out determined to take it down..! :D

The tree thing is OK. It's walking on pavement cracks you have to worry about.

I wish mine would just take itself down though. It's so depressing doing it.

We'll do it this weekend, won't have time to do it during the week. Hate taking down all the lights and decorations :(

i think the roots of bringing in greenery are more pagan tha christian (although like most pagan traditions nicked by christians)

Took it down yesterday, it scratched me up something fierce!

I hate when it gets to this time of year, I just want all the decorations down, I hate walking into town and seeing them all still up. It's uber depressing!

Will take it down the 6th or 7th.

Tip if you have an artificial tree, leave all the decorations and lights on it , fold the branches up disconnect the sections and pop it back in the box, next year it will take no time at all to set it up again.

No need to even fold it up... put a blanket over it and keep it in the corner of the room.

When people call over and ask what it is, simply tell them in the calmest voice possible: "it's a game I play with all my house-guests called 'Guess The Dead Family Member!'"

That's why this country's fucked, people not having trees, and those having trees taking them down on the wrong day.

i didnt bother putting one up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

I only put a Christmas tree up in work. One of those miniature ones. Great thing is that I don't have to take it down. Just leave it until someone else takes it down when they get sick of seeing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,942 ✭✭✭topper75

I heard the tree goes on the 6th and I'm cool with that.

How about the crib though? I mean I'll have just put those 3 king figurines in, and no sooner have they got comfortable there next to the lowly manger, they get bundled up to the dark recesses of the attic with the rest of it? Makes no sense.

I'd take it down on the 6th normally, my Ma calls the day "Little Christmas." However, last night I looked out and the street was dark, all the neighbours have taken their lights down so mine are coming down today. It's a bit sad really.

up on the 8th Dec and down on 6th of Jan is the tradition. The 6th of Jan is also known as Nolliag na mBan or Women's Christmas, a big day in Cork/Kerry, not sure if it's done anywhere else.

I think the 6th is the most important day of Christmas in Spain. It's not just an Irish thing it's a Catholic thing.
