How Can You Get 'Garage Insurance'?

How can this be done without actually owning/working in a garage? I know a couple of people that have it but I've never really thought about it until now.

    What are the minimum requirements?

Why do you want "garage insurance" if you are not a operating a garage??? If you are some young buck driving a Skyline and are trying to take a short cut on insurance, then all you are doing is driving up the business costs for hard working hard pressed professional folks who are struggling enough at the moment.

    First, I don't drive a Skyline.

Second, where does it say in my post that I want to get insured on a garage policy?

Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

    Jeez Darragh! Assume much?
The guy just asked a question. He wonders how people he knows are getting garage policies, not how he can get his own. If anything, the OP reads to me like he might be looking to shop these other "Skyline pilots" to the insurers for not meeting the requirements.

Normally you would have to be in the trade to get it either working as a mechanic, garage owner, valetors, sales men etc If there not i dont see how there doing it but most likely can be done someway as there are ways around everything. Are you sure its garage insurance they have and not just drive other cars extension that their using

Motor Trade (Garage) insurance can only obtained correctly by people engaged in THAT business. Yes, there are those who have these policies who are not involved in motor trade activity but they would have had to misrepresent the facts on their proposal form to do so and the consequences of this are serious

Just asking what the OP needs this type of cover for. He/she hasn't mentioned anything about being involved in the industry, or planning on such an involvement, just the fact that they are looking for garage insurance, presumably so that the OP can drive any car anywhere. This type of cover can be obtained for a lot less than the cost of garage insurance which will be a minimum of 3K a year.

I never said I needed it or wanted it, I was just curious as to how people that are not in the trade can obtain it.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

The people you know that have it probably have part time trader road risk only policies.

I don't know why some people who are not in the trade seek out garage insurance so much. A lot of policies will let you drive any car (within limits), on your own policy at no extra cost on a 3rd party basis.

Because your driving of other cars extension will not allow you drive any additional car owned by you or registered in your name. So if you need to tax it or have a loan out on it, it can cause serious problems

Anyone can obtain a motor trader insurance policy. It simply allows you to drive any vehicles once you're licensed and you can allow others to drive vehicles (Test Drive) so long as you're with them. Some insurers will seek evidence whether your a trader or not others won't.

Garage Insurance - I assume you're talking about the green trade plates - you need to be a registered garage and be paying rates to get be eligable to apply for a set. They can inspect your premises if they so wish. We've had issues getting ours but we pick up two sets tomorrow (applied in early December for them).

Just to clarify, if there's anyone here with experience of trade insurance, does this rule apply to all companies' trade policies? And, is there any restrictions on who is allowed test drive? (e.g. over 25s etc.)

Don't worry, i'm not trying to exploit the rules or anything, just curious.:p

Indeed it was :), thank you, the part time mention stuck in my head. I changed my car four times last year and was thinking of getting a quote, didn't bother in the end, would be handy though, manu insurers don't like you changing cars that often, also swapping cover for a week or so became a big no no with my crowd.

When I test drove the car I bought I was given garage plates and he did not come with me. He put two plates on top of each other on the dash Why two? Just curious

Because you are supposed to clearly display a trade plate FRONT and REAR...the dealer was just too lazy to place them properly in the front and rear windows...as is often the case (its an offence not to clearly display them btw)

    RoverJames,

Trade Plate are only for untaxed or unregistered vehicles...NOTHING to do with Trade Insurance.

It is, to a certain extent. I do know that you have to declare your current cars when applying for it first, I doubt you have to inform them of every new car you register, as it would be impractical for most people.
