DTT Bettystown

Hi, does anyone know if its possible to pick up UK Freeview DTT in the Bettystown area from either the North or across the sea?

I can get ordinary BBC and UTV analogue with a fairly decent signal but no DTT yet on an old Mpeg-2 tuner.

I've read on this board that Kilkeel won't be up to full strength until 2012 and that RTE are jamming the signal, don't know the accuracy of either statement.

I'm assuming that Irish DTT is no problem from Clermont with the right receiver.

    Thanks for any feedback.

You never read on this board that RTE are "jamming" anything from Kilkeel.

You'd be surprised what you can read on these boards!:)

Try a search using "RTE" and "jamming". More than one recent thread coming up.

Anyway the realpolitik of that is for another day, I just wondered if anyone else is getting Freeview near here? If yes, what do I need to do?

Answering my own question here in case anyone else from the area is looking for the information.

Got the new Mpeg4 TV with Mpeg4 and using the ordinary aerial that was on the roof, it picked up all the Irish DTT channels fine, but none of the freeview ones.
Haven't tried it with a high gain aerial yet.

I see this thread is getting a bit old now but just wondered if you have managed to have any success with this since you last posted? I am trying to do the same in Bettystown and cannot find a definitive answer of if you can get the freeview signal this far south.

Wait until October 10th & you should get a Freeview signal there. The Kilkeel transmitter is scheduled to have the BBC standard def. channels on the air 'before noon' & Divis (Belfast) will also be at full power with these channels.

In Balbriggan another poster is already getting pre-DSO Divis. On the 10th the BBCA post-DSO stations will all be live from Kilkeel and Divis. Last night's results showed that Divis will be romping in along the East Coast.

Are there any pre-DSO tests coming from Kilkeel?

Since RTENL/ComReg's decision to change Mt. Leinster's broadcasting frequency, there is less threat to Kilkeel reception in more southerly locations than there was before. Having said that, settled weather conditions and so on may lead to disruption of reception. Other, more distant, broadcasts can clash with nearby broadcasts especially during settled spells of weather.

As Divis analogue was off-air and came back up in the post-DSO configuration the relays should have done the same as all the links are in place. Certainly in GB the relays were all tested. It is true the disappearance of E39 will help Mount Leinster and Louth and Meath are shielded from Moel-y-Parc. I am afraid inversion is a fact of life everywhere, and it will be coming back in the autumn with the fogs!

I think you need to be further south (near Dublin) for terrain shielding to have any effect, if that's what you mean.

What 'results'? A reception report from one individual is hardly what you'd call a decent sized sample.

MyP has beam restrictions towards the Isle of Man and, of course, Kilkeel. It is also shielded towards Dublin by the North Wales terrain. There are footprint maps on ukfree.tv and the mb21 web site.

You should read the reports of the previous high power tests from Divis, Brougher etc on this forum and over on digitalspy. These were carried out before the Olympics lockdown.

Can you provide a link to a post in this forum with a reception report re. Divis on the east coast? I didn't join this forum yesterday btw.

True, it will and it was raining that night too when I checked the signal meters. :D

One of many from the many earlier full power tests:

I've read it all before, having followed that thread from the start. There's nothing there to form any real opinion as to what the service will be like.

All I would say with any certainty is that those who already receive at least some of the muxes should be in with a good chance of a full reliable service after ASO.

During a spell of good weather (July-ish), we were able to tune in many Freeview Channels (BBC1-4, CBeebies, ITV1, 2, C4, E4, 5, 5USA, etc.). This was obviously just because of weather conditions, but since the MUX's aren't really enabled or near full power in NI yet, we're hoping that we'll be able to pick up Freeview / HD in Balbriggan area.

But, we're still holding out until after 10. October before buying any equipment.

(We receive Analogue channels OK from NI, and Ceefax p. 284 works relatively well, but it's degraded over the last month or so).

Hi, I am high up on a hill a few miles from your area and I pickup 82 Channels with a Triax high gain Group A aerial I have most of the rest using another very high gain wideband aerial apart from CH 29 as Three Rock analogue CH 29 is co-channel with Divis until October. I use Webro WF100 satelllite cable, Triax 34dB Group A masthead amp and a wideband 40db FTE Maximal M1000 one, maybe your equipment isn't quite good enough or is old, aerial too low possibly? :) I get interference from Caldbeck and another Scottish transmitter about five or six times a year usually. There are problems when it is raining near Belfast which causes some breakup of some stations as the signal is very low at the moment from Divis to reach here. I hope that all of the channels come booming in for you by the end of October. A Group A aerial and Group A masthead amp will be needed on October 31st or later.

Have you measured the signal voltage levels from the aerial, so you know how much amplification to use, or is it just guesswork? I suppose if the amps are variable, you can just turn it up until it works ...
