Driving on ice - is doing this for a prolonged period bad for the car?

I guess this is a silly question, and if I was driving correctly it won't do any damage, but I'm starting to feel this high-gear slow pace driving is wearing my car out. I am worried for my clutch! (97 Clio has frequent clutch problems, :( so I like to be delicate on it ). Is there any possible effects this will have on a car?

Yea, you'd be right to worry about the clutch.

The clutch will only wear while it's slipping, ie only when you're starting off or changing gears.

The gear changes were VERY stiff today, held up the car behind me trying to get into first at one stage, felt like i was forcing it...

Put it in reverse before you put it in first.

    You're welcome.

That's normal. The oil in the gearbox is thicker when it's cold, making the changes stiffer. Not a problem in the long term.

It's not likely that a few days/weeks of cold will affect the car.
The same brands we drive here are used in Canada and other places with cold conditions for months in negative Celsius.
However, they are more used to driving during these conditions and to prepare for winter by changing fluids/oils etc.

At the very least it'll get the guy behind you to back off a bit.

It did help a good bit, problem worsened today though was easier to let the car cut out on occasion and then start her up in gear then try to force the gears :( Part of me hopes its my driving at fault and not that the cars broken.....

    OK, let's see....

When you shift the car into any gear, initially, is there a whining, grinding sort of noise, and is it momentarily difficult to get into that gear, and then it just slips right in and the noise goes away?

Yes, thats what happens, there is still a stiffness to it though.
