January is here and the post Christmas gloom has begun...I am trying to plan a trip for my myself and a group of friends...we r all in our 20s and plan to go away in july/august for three weeks.. we were considering island hopping in Greece but I am finding it hard to get any info on this, as it appears that you book the flights and leave the rest to chance...

Does anyone know anythin about this? Money? Accomodation..etc!

Have a look at this site:
    http://www.greecetravel.com/

I looked into this a few months back and found a few good sites on the subject I've got more sites bookmarked about islandhopping in greece but they arent on this pc, I will post them when I get home.

I went a few times, flew to athens, then bus to the port(pireaus). Then get a ferry from there to where ever. When you arrive at the islands there's people waiting for you 24hr with accomodation to offer.

I would recommend it. Pick one group of islands though e.g. Cyclades or Dodacanese to spend most of your time. Do a little bit of research on what athmosphere is on each island, some islands have a bigger party reputation then others. But there are still quiet areas on the party islands.

It's a safe area of the world but still have the anticipation of not knowing what to expect. They may be overnight ferries between two Island groupings aswell.

    Good luck with the trip.

Thanks for the response...checked out that website..it seems good!
Most of the websites offer you the option to book and pay for the travel hopping now, includes flights, transfers, ferrys and accomodation for the 3 wks at about £1,600...would it work out cheaper just booking flights and hoping for the best when we get there?

Booking the accommodation in advance takes the fun out of it. The beauty of island hopping is that you can decide to stay for as long as you like on each island. If you don't like one, move on to the next. Accommodation is almost always easy to get as the owners compete with each other on the quayside when the ferries arrive.

have always wanted to do this. hope you were watching no frontiers on sunday as they were island hopping on it. I would suggest buying lonely planet etc. as they are usually great for info or just go into a bookshop a have a look through to get some ideas.

Definitely get the ferries-reasonably priced beer 24 hrs, open air deck, greek sea and people is a very good mix.By sea is the only way to travel Greece.
I've only gone during late aug/sept when it's beginning to get quiet and have never had a problem getting accomodation at the island pier upon disembarking but it may be a different story if you're going july as this is peak time.It might be an idea to prebook the most popular island you visit, depends on the size of your group perhaps.
Cyclades are great islands,I'd recommend Santorini for a night or 2 and Mykonos for the main session.Paros,Naxos and Ios are good for a couple of nights each and driving around Milos for a day on a moped is pretty much priceless.
Make sure you get the health insurance for when one of ye crashes and bring bandages too.
The price of 1600 you said,if that's per person then I think that sounds expensive, altho it is peak.I'd assume you'd get a flight to athens and a few ferry trips and accomodation at the pier cheaper.

Hi ACUN, which sites have you been looking at that allow you to book everything up front (flights, accom, transfers etc)?

I know this isn't as exciting or adventurous as doing it all when you get there but may be what I am after. Would appreciate any help.
