Have been offered some engine oil 5w-30 Full synth.

My car is a VW 2.0 TDi would it be ok to use this oil in my engine ?

Its conforming to ACEA and API standards etc, which according to my spec is ok to use, just what would be the effect of a different full synth oil, there is another product that is specifically for VW here.

Also the manual states that I should use VW502 00/VW500 00 fully synth oils.. where available.

Does your manual state that 5w-30 is suitable for your engine?

How old is your car? I thought 507 was the spec for the 2.0tdi

05 yeah it can take 5W-30 but it also says you should use an oil that is VW (500,502, and 507) but what would happen if i used the above one which is for a pug/cit car.. would my engine go pop. is there a difference between 5W-30 for VAG/PSA.

I want to service the car myself next time around.

Are you doing a long life or standard service? It seem that the spec of that oil is higher than the spec listed for your car.I have hard that if you put in to high a spec on certain vw's you can have problems with camshaft wear.
Did you get the oil for free? can you not just change it in a local factors for the right stuff and then sleep easy at night!!!

..there is no such thing as Peugeot/Citroen/VAG/MB...etc etc oil. There is oil, and different types are multiple classifed for many makes.

    OP, see this spec:

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Cheers so why does the manufacturer specify for VW/PSA etc

That oil will be fine in your engine, HashSlinging.

The manufacturer recommends that oil because they are making a cut out of it. It is after all "their" oil. It's like zippo lighters recommend you use genuine zippo lighter fluid. That sort of thing.

    As galwaytt pointed out:

So you don't just have to get the VW oil and the oil you have is more than perfect.
