MGM Grand excellent location and reasonable rates when we went this time last year, even used the pool.

Cheers, the MGM is coming up trumps with everybody

    Was there in August 2008

We stayed in Hooters. Just around the corner from the MGM and (at the the time) was a fraction of the cost. Think we paid about $50 anight for a twin room

Make sure you seek out the horse racing game in the MGM, best laugh we had in Vegas :D

With Vegas it is all location - the strip is very long and you have the new hotels and the old town.

Don't worry, there is a monorail and a trolley bus and many hotels are linked but, better to be in the middle of it all.

Then of course it is down to price, at one end of the strip you have Sahara, Circus Circus and Stratosphere - these are a bit of a walk to 'buzz' of the strip but they will be the cheapest strip hotels.
In the middle really it is Treasure Island and Mirage - you will be paying for these hotels though. Then as previously suggested MGM which is alongside Excalibur, New York New York or Luxor and Mandalay Bay which are on the way out of town (although still easy access back to main strip).

With your comment of 1 year old I really have no idea which to suggest as best choice, all hotels have good pools etc to spend time but they are very much aimed at adults.

It is down to what you want to pay and how themed you want your hotel to be, for me, the point of Vegas is the themed hotels and so would go for a New York, New York or if the budget stretches, Treasure Island - nice hotel and good location.

With prices the way they are now look at Bellagio or The Venetian and see if you can get a luxury stay on a budget - I think it was posted on Boards recently that Expedia had packages including Bellagio under €1,000 (cannot remember the exact price).

Go online and look for a vegas strip map to get the locations of all the hotels.

We stayed in the Mirage in 2008 and thought it was fantastic, great location, beautiful newly renovated rooms and one of the best pools on the strip. It also has the white tiger and dolphin habitat (although you pay an entrance fee to get into this). You could be suprised how reasonable the hotels are, we paid $72 per night midweek for the Mirage, check out the discount sites www.fatwallet.com and www.smartervegas.com give use promo codes which you then use on the hotels own booking engine so it is totally on the level.

To be honest, most if the hotels in Vegas are to a really high standard, as a previous poster said, it's all about location, anywhere between Treasure Island and New York, New york on the strip and you should be fine.

we stayed in mgm grand last year- it is a nice hotel but a little away from the centre, 5-10 min walk to the very centre of the strip. If i was going again i would head to the bellagio ( have seen great deals for there) or ceasars palce or venetian. I thought the casino in mgm was very dark compared to bellagio for example. There are great deals to be had at the moment so you should get a great price. We got mgm for 60 euro a night.

I'd recommend caesars palace. stayed there in august and couldn't fault the place.
But as previous posters have said anywhere between treasure island and new york new york are central.
If I go again I'll shop around and get best deals online then head into travel agents and see what they can do for me.

We stayed in the mgm in november and its huge, bearing in mind u have a 1 year old l would'nt recomend it.
depending on which room u get u could have a 15 minute walk from the front of the hotel to ur room.
if ur gona be carrying a baby or wheeling a pram through the casino that could be a long trip every time.

I'd stay somewhere mid strip like ballys (not too dear) or the mirage.

go onto tripadvisor.com and ask on there they are experts u will find codes for cheaper rooms and great tips on vegas.

    have a nice trip.

If you want a cheaper hotel that has a great location, and is not too big, then Bills Gambling Hall and Saloon is hard to beat. It is between The Flamingo and Ballys, and across from Caesers. It has good size rooms and everything you need, and is clean and well serviced.

However, if your budget is not too much of a consideration then The Venetian would be the place that I would recommend. Top class hotel with a good strip location. Also, you must have dinner at the Bellagio buffet at least once. It is by far the best buffet to be had on the strip and is excellent food with a huge variety that will suit everyone.

    Enjoy.

We stayed at the Mandalay Bay a few years ago - amazing!!! Even if you only book it for one night, it has fantastic pool area where you'd think you were at the beach, with sand, wave machines, trees etc. Absolutely beautiful!

    Hi

I woulldnt recommend the MGM. I have stayed there and its huge and also pretty far away from all the others.
I have stayed in 'Paris' hotel a few times and would highly recommend that one. Its central to the whole strip and you can walk out straight on the road. With others the entrances are 10 mins from the road. Also you are directly opposite the Bellagio so you can watch the fountains at the Bellagion whenever you wish.
Its a lovely hotel and not as big as the others so you can get around a lot easier.
The bellagio is lovely but can be expensive and I wouldnt be sure it was suitable for a child (well on that point, are any hotels in vegas suitable for a child).

    Enjoy

Wasn't mad on MGM Grand personally. Loved NYNY tho :D

I stayed in the Bellagio absoloutely fabalous 10/10. Got it cheap on ebookers.ie very good site.

Parents stayed at Bills Gambling which they said was cheap and spotless.

Brother stayed at the Luxor said it was flithy.

Its worth paying a bit more to stay on the strip.

Ya the MGM Grand is a class hotel, I stayed there last summer for 3 nights. It's kind of got a Hollywood/Entertainment theme going on. Excellent all round. Maybe not as central as others but that side of the strip (New York New York) is a must see too.

If money isn't a problem I'd suggest the Wynn. Central, it's the most sophisticated and classiest on the strip. The Bellagio a close 2nd!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 949 ✭✭✭LoanShark

I stayed at the MGM and thought it was lovely, Does exactly what you'd expect from a hotel..

I will suggest Wynns hotel, Is probably one of the finest hotels I have ever been in.. Sitting out the back having cocktail is a nice way to spend an afternoon..

I didnt see the above post before I sent in mine..Just shows I'm not the only one with good taste!

I stayed in Caesars Palace and can't recommend it enough.

Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian, Pallazzo, are all fab.

Treasure Island is a good hotel with a very central location.

Bally's - centre strip and looks grand

Stay away from Circus Circus and Stratosphere - too far away and very very dated

Luxor, MGM, New York New York are all lovely just a little bit further down the strip but still only a few minutes walk away

@ 5starpool: Is Bills hotel called the Imperial Palace?

    I would try www.1800hotels.ie - I got a great deal here.

@ 5starpool: Is Bills hotel called the Imperial Palace?

bills is the small brown hotel located between flamingo and ballys, used to be called the barbary coast before harrahs bought it

bills used to be great deal in 2007 but with many hotels like ballys dropping their rates big time it doesn't seem as attractive anymore, it doesn't have a pool either but you can use flamingos

Stayed in the MGM last year and was very happy with it. If I was going again, though, I'd try and get a deal on the Bellagio. It's fabulous just to walk through and everything looks class. And you always have the fountain if you get bored. ;)

no IP is its own standalone hotel, o sheas is next door to IP and is just a casino it doesn't have rooms

we stayed in the excalibur in november, it was fine, a good base and the rooms were ecently upgraded.

for smack bang in the middle and cheap theres ballys, flamingo and harrahs. bills as mentined is small, does have a late night club though! rolled out of there at half 8 in the morning.

mirage, paris, treasure island, monte carlo, planet hollywood are all a step up and in a good location. if the budget can stretch then the venetian, caesars, wynn, bellagio and pallazzo are all sprectacular hotels.

aria just opened in citycenter-an 8 billion dollar resort.dont know what their price range is but id have a look.its HUGE!

id avoid luxor-thought it was a hole and the dealers at the tables were miserable!

sahara, circus circus and stratosphere are too far up and divided from the strip by huge building sites.

mandalay bay is a beautiful hotel but just a little bit too far imo.

i recently stayed in new york new york and it was great, good theme inside the hotel and the rooms and staff were excellent (they also do a mean pizza in one of the restaurant there). the bars inside are great although one very cheesy irish bar but still a good laugh with live irish bands every night, its good and central with walkways to both the excalibur and MGM, i would definitly stay here again when i go back.

    hope this helps..

sorry to bring back an old thread but I see alot written about New York New York here. weve been looking into booking this hotel..at the minute the cheapest weve seen is booking through the hotel site but just wondering what the story with the service charge. i read elsewhere that some people are charged $25 per night as service charge..not just for this hotel, but I see on sites like booking.com they say service charge and TAX not included. I dont see anything like this on the actual hotel site so would it still apply or be part of the price?
not the easiect decision to try and pick relatively cheap/nice hotel knowing itll cost even more when we get there!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,469 ✭✭✭Pythia

It's 'resort fee' and most of the Vegas hotels are doing it now. I just had a look at booking a hotel in NYNY for tomorrow night and they set everything out quite clearly from what I can see:

    1 Skyline Room 1 night $59.99
    Taxes: $7.20
    Resort Fee: $12.95
    Resort Fee Tax: $1.55
    Total: $81.69

    Deposit Due: $67.19

Stayed in New York New York around 3 years ago and found it very handy to get around the strip (then again I don't mind doing a lot of walking). My only regret was I never went on the coaster. I was in Vegas for a Wedding and TBH planning to do the coaster the day after the wedding was not a good plan :)

Room was big, clean and spaceous but I didn't spend too much time in it!

Some of the others in the party stayed in Paris and the rooms there very nice as well. The wedding reception was held in one of the Suites in the Bellagio and that was lovely (no idea on the cost of that though).

Stayed in the Mandalay Bay last September. Beautiful hotel. If you get a strip-side room, you get an awesome view of the strip.

It has a fantastic beach-pool thing if you like chilling out in the sun or going for a swim before the gambling and drinking :D

It is a little further down the strip, but with the monorail, it's about 5 minutes from NYNY. Don't have a bad thing to say about it.

Got the below picture while taking a helicopter ride which flew over the strip on the way back to the airport. :)
