Is there a different Irish and European warranty on cars? If i buy from the u.k. will the warranty be honoured here? Also what are the warranties for the following (feel free to list any others you know)

Audi, BMW, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Lexus, Mazda, Opel, Toyota.

    Cheers!

All come with 2 years min and would have to be honured at any main dealer in Europe.
Most come with 3 years min in uk and it appears that the 3rd year carries over here for cars originally reg'd in uk even if an identical original irish car only had 2 years. The dealers do tend to say that you will have no warranty or that they will not be prepared to do any work on an imported car as they have their own customers to look after. Its all crap

If you have the car correctly serviced the selling dealer should honur the original warranty . Any Irish dealer will only be prepared to cover work the manufacturer will pay him for under the manufacturers' warranty - probably 2 years.

btw.. all manufacturers are responsible for their product through it's full life... so if you gearbox fails at 3 years + 1 day, they will still pay - just badger them!

Mazda's warrenty is Europe wide and is the same terms across all European contries.

Their American division is different and offers different warrenties.

This is something I have had arguements with Mazda dealers over! (the fuel pump on my car is within the VIN range that gets replaced free in America under warranty, whereas this offer which was made public in America is not on offer for European countries! not that there is anything wrong with my fuel pump, I'd just like a newer version if its going free!)

All manufacturers are liable for their products... look up "watchdog" site in the UK.. I am sure it is mentioned there.

This law has a name which escapes me.

As for cars from the UK.. you could get an "friendly" Irish dealer to repar it and cross charge back to the UK selling dealer. for eg... what if your UK car broke down on hols in France.. that's how you'd have to get it repaired..

If you are really worried by a warranty.. won't be much 200/300E or so?

No. A warranty is essentially part of the original contract of purchase and is subject to terms and conditions including an expiry period. Car manufacturer warranties can usually be transferred to subsequent owners but once they expire after however many years - that's it for your warranty. A manufacturer may do a "goodwill" gesture outside the warranty to shut you up but they may choose not to and have no legal obligation to do so.

Consumer law (very similar for UK and Ireland as it is largely based on EU directives) may give you rights regardless of any warranty but against the dealer you bought the car from, not the manufacturer.

I believe this is not the case if the problem existed before the warranty eneded.. this could include poorly designed parts as well as problems showing themselve thru' unexpected wear.
