If you fail the exam you'll have a chance to repeat in August. If you fail that you may be allowed to carry the subject into your 2nd year depending on whether or not it's a core subject.

i did a project worth 10% in S1, and have an exam now worth 40%, a second project in S2 worth 10% and an exam in may worth 40%.

do i have to pass this exam in a week, or can i get say 20% in the exam (which would be 8% of my grade for the year) and add that to my two projects and final exam, to make up the 40% needed to pass the year?

Well if that's so I assume you just need 40% overall for the year in the course, but usually there's a "floor" (base level) you have to achieve in your exam, which is usually 20% of that exams individual grade.

did you have to pass Java exam in yr 2 - tutor reckons exam must be passed - not sum of marks, assignment+exam

Some modules have threshholding this means you must pass both assignments and exams some dont. That you should check with the lecturers.

In some cases you can pass by compensation so if you get between 35 and 40% in a subject you can make up for it by getting double the difference between your score and 40$ so if say you had 2 modules one you got 36% in then you would need to get 48% in another module to pass the one you failed.

You are allowed carry up to 10 credits I believe if you fail a module worth more then 10 credits or 2 or more modules whos creditation equals 15% or more you will have to repeat those modules again however you do get 3 chances to pass exams vefore repeating. Fail at xmass and have a repeat in May possibly or if not in may then in september. If you fail that then you repeat the exam with the following class however you may still do the next year at the same time.

ITs quite confusing but it makes it much harder to fail completely and gives you every opportunity to pass.
