The Crystal Maze to return with...........

    .......Amanda Holden?

    From guardian
"Start the fans, please!" Yup, we have had everything else back on our screens, now the Sun reports that the 1990s gameshow staple The Crystal Maze is to return. ITV is keen on a format based on the programme, which had contestants in a perspex booth snatching gold tokens blown around by giant fans. But instead of Rocky Horror Picture Show creator Richard O'Brien as host, ITV is plumping for Amanda Holden.

    This better not happen.

The thing about Richard O'Brien that made the show great was that you could actually believe he lived in the Crystal Maze and put people through these tests. He was like David Bowie in Labyrinth. The show didn't feel like a gameshow and more like a scripted show with characters. Everything about O'Brien was great, his odd conversations, playing the harmonica... etc, he had the manner of some genius that had grown socially odd from being isolated in this Maze for his whole life.

Holden belongs on some camp gameshow with a plastic set and maybe a conveyor belt or two. I'd prefer to see an actor get the role of hosting this show than a soulless talking head on a stick.

They should have Richard in a role similar to the gamesmaster (patrick moore), you see him occasionally but he's not running around the place. He is in his late 60s after all.

Brilliant description of what Richard did for the show.

    Bang on.

Would be a welcome return but Holden?? Please god no. The show was a great watch back in the day but would have to be a big overhaul for T.V. nearly 20 years later.

With the right kind of games and host I think it could be good.

Bloody loved that show and I agree, O'Brien was excellant. A little too good in fact, as said already he really did come off as being very very zany. It's only years later when I realised he was the same Richard O'Brien that wrote the 'Rocky horror picture show' that things became clearer :)

would be great vehicle for jedward. they could do their stupid skipping dancing on the spot as they explain the rules of each test. Maybe have one as good and the other as evil ;)

I'd nominate someone like Noel Fielding or Count Arthur Strong (Steve Delaney).

He'd be great but he wouldn't do it..

And while I love Fielding, I do think his humour doesn't particularly appeal to the mainstream. Yes, Boosh was a success but it's because it was aimed at a certain audience.

The Crystal Maze needs to appeal to viewers all ages and sizes.. knowing ITV, they're gonna go for something overly safe and saccharine - they'll bring out the Vernon Kay's and the Stephen Mulhern's of this world.

I loved this show too. Noel Fielding sprang to my mind too. I don't think i could watch it with Amanda Holden :(

    Jasus that could actually work.

    /can't believe I typed that.

One of my earliest tv memories and favourites this show. O Brien was masterful in his role and the show lost a certain spark with his replacement.
I don't agree that Fielding would make a good replacement. He has got the wackyness but I just don't see him as a right fit for this.

Brand and Fielding together as hosts

Holden is a terrible choice she cant act or present

Excellent description, saves me a lot of typing. :)

Absolutely adored this show when I was younger. Although I didn't like it as much when O'Brien was replaced by Ed Tudor-Pole. As L31mr0d pointed out, O'Brien just added an extra dimension to the show and made it believable in an escapism type vibe.

It would be an absolute tragedy if they let Holden present it.

Is it All Star Crystal Maze, another ITV dud.

    Best description EVER.

Great that they're gonna bring the show back, but it'll be tragic if they let Holden present it...
If they can't get O'Brien back, they're gonna need some quite quirky in to do it.

Anyone think Alan Davies would be very good at it?

Oh no. I like him but he wouldn't suit it.

It needs to be truer to the original and have someone fairly leftfield and quirky to present it, an unknown perhaps, but in this celebrity obsessed era we live in I doubt that will happen.

Great show when O'Brien hosted. It was originaly Channel 4, but ITV doing it won't be the same, and Amanda Holden will not suit the show. I will so not watch this when it broadcasts.

They need to keep the spirit of the original. I think part of what was interesting for the viewer was seeing a clatter of people usually with different styles trying to work individually and as a team...but towards a goal that didn't matter a huge deal. It's the experience, not the end goal. One of things that goes wrong with these remakes is that they often miss the point of what made the originals work. Crystal Maze was really self-deprecating ('And if they're lucky they might win something...completely worthless'), slighly cheap, but most importantly (as with a lot of really great things from that era) people would want to go on it because it was fun to take part in.

Did you ever see any episodes featuring kids? Bloomin' heck they put some of the adults to shame.

Great description of Richard O'Brien - worthy of reprint elsewhere! I can't imagine anyone else pulling off the "Mumsie" routine like he did. He just had that quality that made you think that just maybe that was his mum living with him in the Crystal Maze.

For a host I was thinking a "Master Blaster" type character from Mad Max. Only in reverse.............Say Mr. T sitting on Stephen Hawkings back....now that would get the ratings going.

What about Adam Buxton or Joe Cornish? They did a great Star Wars version many years ago.

Eddie Izzard would be brilliant as a host, but he'd be far too busy to do it.

Russell Brand was born to do this, can't imagine anyone else doing it!
pity it's on ITV, so it'll be crap anyway.

    Everyone is taking about hosts...

What about what ITV will do to the set?????

To the games even...or what games they may suggest.
Guarantee they will stuff it up.

I'm utterly disgusted that they want Amanda Holden...no offense to her as a human being BUT COME ON!!!

Such a great tv show, im not sure if it would translate as well to modern tv though. No doubt they would try and turn it into some sort of cross between family fortunes and total wipeout.

Will Holden be doing her Britains got talent crocodile tears every time someone gets an automatic lock in??
