Was considering buying a '01 Mondeo 1.8 petrol with circa 90,000 miles, does anybody have any idea what this type of car could be like, reliable? heavy on petrol? nice drive? etc.....

    Stolen from here:http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=119

Excellent to drive. More spacious than original Mondeo. Estate roomier than a Merc E-Class. Good value used.
Bad: Some early models have uncomfortable seats. Limited storage for odds and ends. Various problem areas including DMFs on diesels.

WARNING An engine rattle from 4 - 5 year old 2.0i petrol engines might indicate wearing of the shaft of the injection air inlet manifold flaps. If these come off they are then ingested by the engine, wrecking it. This is beoming increasingly common. Also affects 1.8i engines. See www.fordmondeo.org/forum/showtopic.php?tid/777251

I have an 02 one with 100k miles and its running like a clock.

I removed the inlet manifold flaps as they had been getting rattley.

Very solid car though not particularly fast. Well, not fast at all.

They are also VERY cheap 2nd hand and great value for what you get.

Looking for a 03/04 mondeo myself, Diesel -- Any thoughts on this car - reliable - fuel consumption & what would the tax be on the 1.9 version?

    Thanks all

Good car, as long as you get it for a good price of course!!;)
Try and pick up the Platinum model.
Tax is €614 /year as far as i remember.

got a 01 zetec, and its practially bomb proof

wouldnt say its a slouch either, with circa 130bhp.

it has all the passive safety of a merc (8 airbags) and once its looked after it will serve you well.

I had the usual rattle syndrome probelm at the rear which turned out not to be mountings but suspension arms. easy enough fix.

forget the rep image thats trashed about, the 01 onwards mondeos are probably the best kept secret out there now.

Try and get one that's had a new clutch recently, because a replacement will cost about €1,600.

€1600 to replace the whole car? A bit excessive don't you think....

where are you getting that figure from?

i got mine done here for €300 including parts.

hi I have a 03 mondeo tdci zetec 130 bhp. The car has great handling and power, will do about 550 miles to the fill on avg on long journeys and bout 400 for city driving. Since I got it I had to replace one injector at bout 125k miles. You would want to check the allignment of the tyres regularly as it will eat tyres if you are not careful. There is no 1.9 in the mk3 its only available in the mk 4 model

I had a 01 zetec and sold it. Biggest mistake I ever made. Damn I miss that car...

i was being sarcastic. If a clutch cost €1600 to replace (which it doesn't) then you would be spending most of the value of the car.

There is no 1.9 litre engine in the Mondeo.

The 01 to 07 MkIII Mondeo range as I know it

    Petrol:-
    1.8 litre (100bhp) LX
    1.8 litre (125bhp) Zetec
    2.0 litre (143bhp) Executive/Ebony (upto 2003)
1.8 litre SCi (130bhp) Ghia petrol (from 2004)
    2.5 litre (170bhp) Ghia X
    3.0 litre (226bhp) ST220

    Diesel:-
    2.0 litre (90bhp) TDDi LX
    2.0 litre (115bhp) TDCi Zetec
    2.0 litre (130bhp) TDCi Zetec/Ghia
    2.2 litre (155bhp) TDCi Ghia X/Titanium X (from 2004)
    2.2 litre (155bhp) ST TDCi (from 2004)

about 1700 but it can go up to 2800 on GHIA X and 2.2 models.

I have a mech looking at the second one tomorrow. Not sure if I trust the miles on either car.

Not good. Would not touch it. The engine seemed fine from my inexperienced point of view (10 yrs driving) and it handled well on the motorway. I was disappointed by the answers I got from the sales guy regarding the history of the car. Its a UK import.

    1. Is there any service history? - I don’t know
    2. Was the car ever crashed? - I don’t know
    3. How many previous owners? - 2, I think.
    4. There bonnet appears to be off line (after doing the finger test on the edges) - Thats just the way I got the car.
The sales guy owned the dealship so you would think he would know his products a little better.
No confidence in this purchase at all. Its the LX model as well so price is off as well. I have to say though that I test drove a TDDI (90bhp) which was real noisy - the TDCI is much quieter and has a good bit of poke (130bhp 6 speed).

I'll let you know how the second one goes.

Good call on walking away from that one.
I';ve had 2 diesel mondeos, a 01 and a 04 one, both served me well.

A few things for focus on when loooking to buy -
Water ingress at the drivers footwell.
ARB's on the back can prematurely fail.
    Clocking (as you've already guessed)
Cracked/chipped windscreens - can be expensive to replace due to the elelemtn in them.
Tracking - can easily be put out causing very bad tyre wear.
Handbrake cables can seize easily too.

Great cars tho - 50mpg, and a niuce cruiser.

Just have to keep searching I guess. Ill def use one of those motor checker sites before I buy though & ive never brought a mech to inspect a car before but I will next time.

Potsy11 That sales man must have been on something. He is more or less telling you not to buy:eek:

I was shopping around for a Mondeo earlier in the year and it was unreal the amount of crap that was out there. Mostly from dealers mis-advertising a car as "mint" or "Full Service History".

Go private if you can. The dealers will just break your heart. You'd swear sometimes they have queue of customers out the door waiting on the car and they don't need your business.

Also, take your time and look at as many cars as you can. This is a mondeo we are talking about, not exactly rare cars...

Why are some dealers listing a car as 1.9L if there is no such thing:confused:

Dealers get loads of things wrong every day. That's only a minor issue.

The Mondeo is a popular car especially as company cars, taxis and state cars. High mileage, abused, knackered examples are plenty and go for buttons at auctions especially in the UK. They find their way here where the sellers seek crazy money for them.

Better off finding a clean, tidy private example with a decent service history.

I probably shouldn't limit myself to a mondeo. Can anyone recommend a good diesel, nothing too high in tax & insurance, E5000 is the limit.

    Just my 2 cents...
Of the top of my head that i would consider - Octivia
    - Volvo s40
    - Corolla
    - Primera
Some others that usually go under the radar
03-04' Alfa Romeo 147 1.9 JTD 140BHP (not the most reliable model)
00-01' BMW 3 Series TD SE
03-04' Fiat Multipla (won car of the year:eek:)

    03-04' Ford Focus 1.8 TDCI

Have drove brothers 1.8 duratec petrol mondeo 2001 a number of times. Really nice car to drive in my opinion. Smooth and comfortable. He reckons it not too bad on fuel either and maintains that the duratec engine is recognised as being that bit more relaible than the Zetec (of which I can't say is true or incorrect as have never checked it up). Prices have seemed to come down a lot lately in the 2001 - 2007 model and I reckon if you buy well you get a hell of a lot of car for your money.

According to chap brother bought his of at the time he had replaced the rear caliper at a main dealer not too long before the sale which had set him back quite a few $$ so perhaps something to be mindful of in your endevours.

A buddy of mine had a '01 Diesel Mondeo which he bought with 160,000 miles on the clock. It ran like a sowing machine despite the fact that he gave it dogs abuse. He once ran for 25K miles between service! He drove it up the worst roads in the country, drove it foot to the floor all the time and full blown Monaco GP starts off every light was standard.

Admittedly, he had to change clutch/flywheel at 230K (according to service history they were day one stuff) and also the starter as the crap from the flywheel breaking up got into the starter. Also the handbrake itself had to be changed and the clutch pack in the a/c pump failed, causing the a/c pump to seize, throwing off the fan belt.

It eventually died (electrical & accident damage) and was replaced by another Mondeo.

Im just looking at a Mondeo at the moment. Looks good but the only thing is the dealer states ( 2 owners ) but a history check states 4 owners, And its a 2004.

What do you think, genuine mistake or something more sinister?

    And is 4 owners for a 2004 a bit high or normal:confused:

it's a bit high but might be nothing to worry about. Why does
the dealer think it has 4? What does the registration document say?

What is the rest of the car like, full service history? Milaege look right?

The dealer says 2 previous owners on his web site but mywheels.ie says 4 previous owners. If i view it ill def have a mechanic give it the once over.

It doesnt state any service history & its a 2004 tcdi wth 100,000 miles
