Jailbreaking query

    Hi,

I've ordered an iPhone from IOS for use on VF network (who knows when it will arrive, but anyhow). Apparently the phone they supply is unlocked.

I understand the basic concept of jailbreaking, but is it really worth it?
Can it damage the OS or the hardware in any way?
Does it effect warranty issues if the phone has to be sent back to Apple?

Anything else, good or bad, that I should know about jailbreaking?

    Thanks

Jailbraking is different to unlocking... Jailbreaking allows you to install software that is not sanctioned by Apple. Jailbreaking can be reversed by doing a factory restore (although note you will need to reinstall All Apple products on your pc for your phone to sync again) ... or the applemobiledev.dll

If however it is NOT unlocked and you want to unlock it, you first need to jailbreak then install software that unlocks your phone.

NOTE if you unlock your phone and decide to do a factory reset you phone is very likley to become a candidate for a door stop or as its known "Brick" .

    Hi,

Apparently the phone is arriving today.

So am I right in thinking that if it is already unlocked, then it is not really possible to brick it?

Can I do amy damage to it by jailbreaking, I'd hate to brick it, but the way I'm reading the reply above is that unlocking is what bricks it, and unlocking comes after jailbreaking. So if I jailbreak it but do not need to unlock it, am I safe?

When I connect to internet or sync the phone, is there any way for apple to know that the phone is jailbroken, and subsequently can they do anything to lock it up on me?

Sorry if these are naive questions, I genuinely don't know much about this type of stuff, although I'm technically minded enough to be able to do it should I decide to.

    Is jailbreaking really worth it?

You can pm me if this topic to too sensitive for public discussion.

No - Apple won't know whether or not the phone is jailbroken. You can always restore it to Factory settings if you had to send it back to apple for any reason (repair etc).

TBH, you can't really do any irrepairable damage by jailbreaking. I have jailbroken my 3G many times now but i'm currently running it without a jailbreak as my battery life had gone to sh1t and i had read on some forum or other that it may have been due to the jailbreak.

Once you're comfortable with the phone etc you should look into jailbreaking it if you want to install the non-apple approved apps et al.

If I jailbreak it after I've had it for a while, do I loose any data off the phone that I've put on there since I got it? Videos, pictures, mails, etc.?

Presumeably if I have to do a restore, I'll loose all that data too?

I got one of the iphones from IOS, at the moment theres no way of jailbreaking them unless everytime you reboot your phone you plug it into your computer & re-jailbreak it with blackra1n.
Now in the month or so since I got it I think I may have switched my phone off once, but still its a major hassle if your battery ever dies when out & about

My one from IOS (and I would assume the rest too) obviously has the new bootrom mentioned here:
