When you apply for entry to the defence forces you go through all the testing. medical, drugs, fitness and the eye sight. i am just wondering what exactly the eye sight requirement is in the df?? and also where exactly do they stand on lasr eye surgery??

Well being colour blind is not going to help. Your eyesight doesn't need to be perfect, but I don't think you can be colour blind. As for lazer eye surgery, do they need to know? ;) Honestly, how will it effect your performance? Just keep quiet about it ;)

well i passed the eye test and colour blindness test in the RDF two years ago. see im perfectly willing to get laser eye and not tell them but im wondering if theres someway of them finding out during an eye test. i suppose theres really only one way to know and thats go for it as soon as theyre recruiting again.

Officially - no laser surgery allowed.
Officially - they will catch you during the medical due to the scarring left behind
Officially - WoD has announced they are re-evaluating the requirements.

Surely you're not implying that serving members paid for laser surgery while on leave and said nothing? Possibly told anyone who asked that they were wearing contacts? Surely that wouldn't happen?

I have the exact same concerns OP, will definately be trying for a cadetship or basic the next time recruiting comes around. But yeah my eyes are certainly my biggest weakness.

do you think they will lift the ban on not allowing candidates with colour blindness to get in??

Plenty of people with glasses in the DF.

My mate is in the British army and he wears glasses/contact lenses...

I always thought you had to have perfect eye sight to get in.

There are two types of Laser eye treatment, lasek and lasik, the latter leaves almost no scarring.

Then why would anyone go for lasek if it does leave scarring...?

About 5 to 6 times the cost. While you recover your vision quicker (24 hours as opposed to a week or so) the healing time is longer, up to 6 months. instead of 2.

I'm almost positive I don't meet the standard needed without correction. Not a 100% on that though, need to confirm it.

Well wait a minute....why officially do they not allow laser eye surgery?

If it improves their vision so they won't have to be bothering with contatcs/glasses...

I think they said the Defence Forces had concerns over the structure of the eye being weakened from the surgery. Like if you get hit in the eye or whatever.

Its a ligitimate concern, but any operation takes time to heal. Night vision is quite bad for a month or so after. Sounds like the DF is working off old medical advice.

After seeing Top Gun as a kid I was obsessed about having a career in that field!

Then eyesight went when I was 9 or 10.
So put all those dreams aside :(

    "Vision must be not
    less than 6/18 in
    each eye, corrected
    to not less than 6/6
    in one eye and 6/9
    in the other"

I actually planned on going and getting tested this week aswell but the weather obviously turned to **** lol.

Don't know exactly(must get the doc to tell me next time I am there)...but I just got the nearest ruler and measured how far I can see clearly.

Can only see things clearly up to 8 inches from my eyes. :(
Once it goes past that it begins to blur.

There's no way any army/forces in this world who have me...unless I got the laser treatment.
But from what other posters are saying even that may not get you in.

Well don't give up buddy, if theres a chance you can fix it with laser and you really want it go for it. Were you thinking of the defence forces? Not sure how Top Gun that would be though lol:p
