Myself and a few mates went to Thailand last summer and booked through USIT and our return flights worked out around €1000 each. We're going to book it again in the next few weeks for this summer and we were wondering would it be worth the extra hassle of booking with an airline and cutting out the middle man or should we just go with USIT and let them organise all the flights/connections?

    Wow, don't use USIT.

My return flights last year cost me 495 euro, and I booked them around the end of January.

    We used expedia.co.uk

    Do this, and this only:

    Ryanair to Stansted
Then Air Asia to Kuala Lumpur
    Then Air Asia to Bangkok.

I'm in SE Asia at the moment and for <600 euro I got the following:

    Dub-Stansted (Ryanair) RETURN
    Stansted-KL (Airasia.com) RETURN
    KL-Perhentian Islands (Airasia.com) RETURN
    KL-Chiang Mai

    You're welcome :)

I spent 2 weeks in Thailand in Oct just gone. Whole package including 11 nights accommodation in a fab luxurious hotel came to just 1,200. So you should definitely be able to get it cheaper than 1,000 for flights alone.

 Sorry but ye got fleased!! Why would you bother booking with USIT when you don't need a visa or anything? Always book independently! I went in July for 2 months and paid €550 return with Gulf air. I've heard good things about Air Asia too but think you have to fly to Singapore and then fly on to Bangkok. Anyway €1000 is insane, dam USIT are such a bunch of cowboys.

EDIT: Sorry didn't notice Kraggy already recommended Air Asia.

Or just fly with Etihad from Dublin for about 650 euro.

    Excellent excellent value imo.

Thanks for the tips, I can't believe how much we paid compared to you guys! I'll have a look around this week.

    One-way?

I flew with Etihad last summer and despite nearly 20 hours of flying each way they were the best flights I've ever been on.

Nah, return flights can be got for as low as 580 depending on what dates you fly on.

I know it's possible to get there for cheaper but spending the extra few euro more than Air Asia/Gulf Air to go with Etihad is well worth it imo.

I've flown the same route 6 times now. 16 hour trip. Nice little break in Abu Dhabi at the half way mark and only for an hour. The perfect amount of time for stretching the legs, sending an email or two then back on another plane.

Service is great, food is as good as I've had on a plane, entertainment choice is top notch, I've never been delayed and they've got an office in Bangkok if you need to deal with them face to face while away.

The last few times I've flown that route I haven't even bothered checking for other cheaper options.

I've been looking around at flights and the price difference as I expected is monumental. It's well worth shopping around. Granted some of the advertised prices are not as they appear ie. some not including taxes, etc. and only available on a limited number of dates.

Not to hijack the thread but I'm thinking of going to Phuket for 3 months from June-Aug (mainly to train-Muay Thai) but I'm aware it's monsoon season and it's kind of putting me off. How bad is the weather at this time of year?

I was there Jun-Aug and it barely rained. In 7 weeks I'd say it rained maybe 6 days. And even then it just absolutely lashes for about an hour or two then the sunny skies are back.

I was all over Thailand this summer and before I went I was a bit weary when everyone told me it was their winter and the weather was bad this time of year. Well, there were blue skies and sunshine every day. You might get 30-45 minutes of rain the odd day but overall the weather is great and it shouldn't put you off going.

Looking for flights myself. lowest I seem to find is around €620/€650. Anybody else see a better deal?

What dates would be cheap enough? Ideally I want to leave the end of may and stay in thailand for 2 months. would leaving in june or july be cheaper?

I've flown to bangkok with etihad a few times. Very comfortable flight and have always been the cheapest available any time I booked

Looking up flights now for mid-June to mid-August. I was hoping to go with Etihad but the cheapest possible price for those dates is €850 which is a little too much for me :(

Yeah i did your post, checked out airasia.com. found it was cheap like you said. And i appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. For my dates I got london(stansted) - kuala lumpur €507. kuala lumpur - bankok €65. Both return. But means I also have to get a flight to london aerlingus atm have them for €75 return(heathrow). €118 (gatwick)
Aerlingus don't fly to stansted though. So for €647(at the cheapest) I get a lot of hassle finding my way around london. ebookers has a one stop over in copenhagen for €608 from dublin - bangkok.

Did you fly that route, dub-lhr-stn-kul-bkk? how did you find it? how much time did you have between flights? would you advise staying in kuala lumpur for a night or two? I might try mixing up the dates to see if I get a better deal. Thanks. I appreciate any info you have.

€608 is a good price (with SAS I presume?).

    You should also try www.kayak.com

AVOID China Airlines! Usually cheaper than the rest by about €50 but totally not worth it. Old old old planes, grubby, ditsy staff, poor safety record, I was on the edge of my seat for 10 hours! Have you tried BA? We got a good deal with then a few years back.

Weather was fine when we were there in August even though it's monsoon.
