RAM Upgrades for Dell

My girlfriend has a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop which is lacking in several areas as you may well imagine. Anyway the most offending shortcoming is it's poor RAM. It'd be great if I could upgrade it but I know Dell have a reputation for being difficult to improve. I've heard of a certain kind of USB key that can be used to boost RAM, something like that would be fantastic. Does anyone know of any that are compatible and where I might get one in Dublin city centre? Please and thanks.

That's something built into vista that you are thinking of and to be honest it's crap and a waste of a good usb key. Ram is easy to upgrade on a dell. You need ddr2 so-dimms. 2 x 1GB sticks would give you 2GBs ram which would be the minimum I'd go for.

Got to the Crucial (EU) website and enter the make and model of the laptop. It'll give you various options that are tested with and guaranteed for that particular laptop. An upgrade for a 1545 would be quite cheap. Just make sure that you buy more than you already have. Fitting is relatively easy once you have the right size screwdriver to get the access panel off. As AlmightyCushion says a 2GB kit would probably be the best option (assuming that the laptop already only has 512MB or 1GB).

Do you need Dell to install it for you or can I install by myself ?

The install is generally very easy. Most laptops have a couple of small access panels on the bottom. One of these is for the memory. You just need to remove one or two small phillips screws, lift off the panel and replace the two memory DIMMs with the new pair. The DIMMs are held in place with small metal clips that are slightly fiddly but you just need to take your time with them.

Honestly, I wouldn't know how to do it myself. Saying that, if it can be taught easily, I'd be delighted to learn provided the risk of ****ing her laptop up isn't too high

Dell provide an online service manual for all their laptops. Here's the one for the Inspiron 1545. If you click on 'Memory' link there'll be instructions along with links to other steps such as removing the access panel.
