WTF?? is going on with this film, currently watching it, was expecting a horror, seems more like twisted porn.

Can anyone give me a quick run down on what's going on, i'm about 45 minutes into it....

You don't need to see this film, some wonderful cinema scenes but the rest of it makes it a bad watch. Thankfully over now.

This film is still quite fresh so please use spoilers.

Its a pretty graphic film and, to put it mildly, a bit mental. thats Von Triers for you, hes like someone pretending they are arty, when hes not, but pretends he is, even tho he says he isnt. and so.

Gainsborough tho gave an excellent performance. Top marks for her.

This movie is horrible. Not just in the literal sense
    Willem Defoe's (?) erect penis, vagina + scissors, there's a worse bit that i can't even type....
but also in the sense that it won't entertain you. It's trying to be arty but just isn't.

    I'd say avoid this movie.

However, if you like to watch arty movies, pretend you get them and talk down to other movie-goers for enjoying the latest Jason Statham actioner, this movie is for you :pac:

I loved this because it reminded me that I love horror movies. I'd become awfully jaded re: horror in the past few years, and Antichrist reminded me why I fell for movies like Halloween, and stories like The Shining in the first place - the sense of unease and terror etc.

Having said that, I can totally see why people don't find this entertaining. I didn't find 'Crank' to be particularly entertaining, but I'm not going to talk-down to anyone who did :P

Are you talking about the same movie?

    Indeed!

But Halloween or The Shining it was not!

Saw it in the IFI a while back. I loved it. Thought it was the best horror film I've seen in well over a decade. It managed to genuinely unsettle me with it's atmosphere. Without that atmosphere the controversial scenes toward the end wouldn't have had that much impact on me.

As for Von Trier, I think he's a bit of a prat.

I think it's your original post that's confusing you.

Aye, the sense of foreboding and claustraphobic tension, the supernatural elements, the sense that all the horror were lurking under the surface within the human itself... that's what I mean. It pointed to something dark and horrible within any or all of us.

Jack's alcoholism, or the almost-seen shape on the corner of the suburban street...

T'was a fantastic film and i'm sort of impressed with it just for the fact it scared the s_hit out of me. Fecking scissors is still engraved in mind....

Bit late to this thread. I'm one of the very few people that actually like this film. I'm not a fan of the average horror film but I do like arty films so I guess that's why this appeals to me more.
I'd probably watch it again and all, have to be on the right mood thought, it's not very easy going.

    Scissors... *shudders*

After watching "Begotten" I was seriously in a wtf?! state of mind for a while after but I feel this film will be even worse after reading about it.

Arty films are always strange, except for the few shorts.

I think as everyone else said it tried really hard but it was a pretty awful film.

The films tries too hard (talking fox anyone?) and is pretentious as hell, but I liked it too. The core ideas examining the role of violence in cinema (especially against women) is very interesting, and some of the imagery is haunting and effective. It's full of psycho babble, but it does linger in the mind for a while. Mostly, admittedly, because of 'those' two scenes which are shockingly uncomfortable and unpleasant. Lars von Trier has made much better films - Breaking the Waves, The Idiots, Dancer in the Dark, Manderlay - but there's some good ideas underneath the layers of unnecessary pretentiousness.

Yeah I agree with that, the talking fox bit was just silly. I just laughed at that. Don't think that was the effect they were looking for though.

I'm into all sorts of films, mainstream or arty. If it's entertaining that's all that matters.

This, though, was pretty disgracful imo. I don't shock easily but i found parts of this genuinly hard to watch. I never saw so many people walk out of a film, and that was before the shocking parts. Those parts aside, the film just seemed boring and unnecessary tbh.

I would never have put this in the "horror" genre like The Shining or Halloween. I just found it pointless and at times revolting. I didn't find this to have any entertaining aspects at all.
