I'm planning to "pop the question", don't want to do it empty handed, but want my girlfriend to be able to choose her own ring.

I read on a forum that it was a good idea to get a cheap ring from argos to do this but the cheapest is about 100euro and hideous! Seems excessive for something that will be made redundant quite quickly.

Does anyone know where I could get a "stunt ring" for the occasion? I know some jewellers will give you one but don't you have to buy the ring proper from them then? I want her to have a complete choice of getting it from anywhere.

why not bring her shopping and look at some of the jewellery..... she might point out a ring that she likes ..... or one that she thinks is lovely.... worst case you buy a rock for her and ask if she wants to bring it back to change it for another one.

I've seen these suggested and it looks like a cute idea:

Stick the ring charm on a charm bracelet and see how long it takes for the penny to drop for her!

Monsoon/Acessorize do nice costume rings. They wouldn't really look like an engagement ring, but you can get lovely ones there, which she could still use as a dress ring after you've gotten the official one.

ebay is another option, you would get one on there for next to nothing

We got engaged just before the Christmas, and my boyfriend got a ring from this site: nuttallsofchester.co.uk which I love; they were also very helpful including when we sent it back for resizing - might be worth a look

I took my gf away a couple of years ago and surprised her with popping the question. I didn't get a ring first as was advised to let her choose it (was a good decision, she turned out to be quite fussy about it). We enjoyed the evening and then the next morning went around a few jewellers and picked a ring together. As a bonus the ring prices were very reasonable there (Malmo,Sweden).

I always loove the idea of the charm bracelet as it is something that you would continue to wear and can add to!

Personally I think spending money on a cheapo ring just for the sake of having something is a total waste of money. You don't NEED to propose with a ring or anything - just have a nice day / evening planned, ask her to marry you and then go shopping for the ring together!

I think it is a lovely idea to have a ring for when you propose.

Marks & Spencers do dress rings (which look like real engagement rings) for about €15

Think Oasis do them as well.

Ignore her and choose the ring first. I proposed before Christmas and, because I'm an idiot, I listened to my girlfriend's incessant insistence over the years that she knows what ring she wants and would be offended not to choose it herself. I got an excellent replica ring in Avoca for €25, gave it to her and she loved it and said she was delighted that I bought the ring as it was just what she wanted and it took the stress out of her buying it.

I then told her, a couple of days later, that the €25 ring was a fake and we were going to Antwerp for her to choose a real one. That's when things got bad. It took two unbelievably stressful days in Antwerp for her to "decide", and ultimately the jeweller said that if she wanted to change her mind over Christmas he would take it back in early January.

    Headwrecking.

I went in to Applebys in Dublin they could not have been nicer. They allowed me to take an engagement ring on the understanding that she could bring it back in and change it. When I brought it back in they made her feel like a princess. This is the only way to go in my opinion. She still talks about how nice the whole experience was. That was years ago, I guess she is giving me a hint as there is a big birthday ahead.

You must have got SOME ring..I thought they were the most Stuck up Shower of P-ricks I ever came across!

I told them my budget, and every ring they showed me was about €500-€2000 more than I had!

    To the OP,
Buy a simple dress ring, I'm sure you have a rough idea what she likes!!
And then when she does wear it in the future,She'll think back on the happy memories that are attached to it!!
