Hello, for the last couple of days when I try to accelarate, my car shudders and feels like its going over lots of very large rumble strips and it wont accelarate. Yet sometimes its OK and will accelarate.

It happened on the M50 today and its very worrying.

    Could this be dirty petrol?

Mine is the very same since the cold weather started. Even when the engine warms up.
It seems like it stutters and is getting no air or petrol when the revs are high.
In idle it keeps skipping every 10 seconds or so.

    Dont know what it is.

Same thing happening my demio on and off since the cold weather, but usually in 3rd gear or when not fully warmed up, thought today it was coming to a complete stop. As you said it's like it was getting no air or petrol for a moment, I'm hoping it might be just dirty petrol after last fill.

is the car idling smoothly and does it rev freely when the gears are in the N position?

I just checked this now and its ok. Nothing out of the ordinary.

The car was well warmed up today and it happened after about 100km's.

I'm thinking dodgy fuel pump or a coil pack.

Has the car been serviced lately?

Sounds like a coil pack starting to fail

I'll be getting the car serviced in a few days.

Whats a coil pack and is it serious? and how much is it to fix?

they can be expensive, but you could get new ones cheaper in a mtor factors or secondhand ones in a scrapyard - second hand ones not the best long term solution but they're good quality coils and tend to last ages. a set of plugs is probably due too.

Your mechanic will have a fair idea when they look at it

What are the chances of it breaking down, I'll be driving it quite a bit tonight?

I don't want to get stranded.

chances are it'll keep on going, but you may be damaging the catalytic convertor if there's unburnt fuel going through the exhaust.

It's part of the ignition system that helps the spark plugs work.
It's an easy job for a mechanic to change them.
I had the 4 in my old Audi changed in under 10mins.

Mine stutters an drops the revs about every 10 seconds while idling. Then back up to normal idling revs.

It could be a LOT of things.

    How cold is it there?
    Is it a standard transmission?
When was the last time you changed your fuel filter? Spark plugs?
