Problem with VW Polo Fuel Cap

May sound silly but anyone know of technique to remove a fuel cap. It's old school & requires key to unlock. I turn the key anticlockwise, turn the cap anticlockwise until it doesn't move anymore (audible click). The cap then doesn't move at all (either way).
Is there something I'm missing (pushing the key in, pushing the cap in...).
I've tried forcing it either way and it doesn't budge.

    Cheers for any hints..

Ps - fully aware of stupidity of locking fuel cap (now!!)

Hold the cap in one hand dont let it move then with the other hand put the key in the lock and turn the key now twist off the cap with your hand
