The general rule is, if they sell that exact item there, then they'll take it back. I work in a department store that has 2 other branches and even though its the same store we won't take back something if we never in fact stocked it to begin with (even if its only a slight variation of a particular item e.g colour etc)

You'll get back whatever you paid for them as long as you have the receipt. If you don't have a receipt they really aren't obliged to do anything for you.

I bought jeans in BT2 in Blanchardstown, decided I wasn't totally happy with 'em and was able to return 'em with full refund in the branch on Grafton Street. I think once you return 'em within 28 days or less (something like that), you should be fine.

    14days or less.

My mum went to return something yesterday and it was within 28days but they pretty much said tough it's 14days and were not even going to give her a credit note til she moaned about how ridiculous it was that there was nothing in stock atm that she liked and wanted to change it to!

I have a handbag that I need to exchange that was bought on December 20th, so it's a few days over the 14 day period, I would have automatically assumed it was 28 days too, thats crazy!!

Did they let her get a credit note or did she have to pick out another item? I'm hoping for a credit note as I want to get 2 items instead in both BT's and BT2's,14 days is a joke!!

She got a credit note when she kicked up a little about how ridiculous it was etc, but they weren't going to give her one.

Cool, thanks a million for letting me know, will have to go in tomorrow and kick up a fuss so!
I'm still in shock over a 14 day exchange period, especially over xmas!
even in Pennys I saw a sign up before xmas that they will extend the exchange period in January.

Hopefully I'll get my credit note tomorrow

You do know that a store doesnt have to give an exchange or refund at all.....
If you dont like the store policies dont shop there :)

Its a strict 14 days policy, its on the back of the receipt, its on a stand beside the till and if you get a smart enough sales assistant, (s)he'll mention it when handing over the receipt.

You can't assume its 28 days for every shop, I read the back of every receipt to check the conditions.

I know its not ideal, but its there policy.

Not true... From consumer rights website
As the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 states, a consumer’s rights when buying in the sales are the same as at any other time. Because your legal right is to a replacement or refund of price in the case of a faulty item, it is an offence for shops to put up notices which say:

    *
    No cash refunds.
    *
    Credit notes only.
    *
    Goods on sale not exchanged.

No sign can affect your statutory rights. Unfortunately there is no obligation on the retailer to take back an item that is not faulty. Many retailers will still exchange items once you have a receipt, but this is good customer relations, not a requirement. Similarly, retailers need not provide facilities for you to try on clothes. However, it’s always a good idea to insist, where possible, as this allows you to find any possible defect in the goods, as well as checking size and fit.

That's for faulty goods. That obviously have to give you a refund if something's wrong with it. That's why you'll see "this does not effect your statutory rights" on signs in shops. That is, you've a right covered by statute to a refund if there's a problem with a product.

They absolutely do not have to give you a refund if you just change your mind.

Sorry but how is what i said not true???
A shop doesnt have to change or give a refund unless the item is faulty.....The op hasnt said there is a fault with the jeans.

If you buy something and then change your mind you arent automatically entitled to a refund. Most shops will have an exchange policy which is usually on the back of the receipt or at a till point. Some shops wont change sale items and thats fair enough but they will tell you.
