Hi all. Was wondering if ye could help me. My 03 Renault Scenic packed in on my last week. Refuses to start and is just clicking when I turn the key. Lights work but cannot lock it with the central locking. Persume it is the battery so going to get one today. anyone know where is the cheapest for them. I'm in Kildare.

    Thanks

    Where in Kildare?
Somewhere like Halfords should have one but make sure that you get one appropriate for your car.

Go to a motor factors, halfords are expensive for a battery

If it's just clicking and the headlights are working it could be the starter motor.

Never presume anything. It might not be the batt. But if it is I think Halfords are a bit dear to be honest. I got a battery for a 1.8 passat petrol last week for 60 quid in a tyre fitters place and a similar one in there would have cost about 112-15

Not many motor factors would be open today though (which is when the OP said that they would pick one up).

I'd recharge the battery that's in it first, see if it holds a charge.

+1. The cold wreaks havoc on batteries. Which is further proof the electric car is (currently) a waste of time. The MINI-E project drivers are claiming their electric MINIs can only do less than 50% of their normal driving distances due to the current cold spells.

I had a battery decide to die in my car, and a good day long recharge brought it back to perfect health, and it's been fine since. The headlights being on are no indication of a starter motor being faulty. Headlights use very little current and can be powered by normal AA batteries if you wanted them to be. The starter motor requires a lot of cranking power, which your battery is unable to deliver because it's discharged.

Get a good charger, try that first. The accumate is probably the best charger on the market at the moment, about 50 Euro, and can bring even sulphated batteries back from the dead.

Thanks for the replies guys. Priced one in Halfords and it was 120 euro so looking for one a lot cheaper.... My partner just checked it there again and now nothing works, he disconected the battery for a few minutes and when he connected it back up it locked the boot (which it hadn't been doing) and its clicking a lot more as if it is trying its best. Going to get some jump leads and try and charge it off partners car. Fingers crossed.

You'll get a better price in a motor factors, but Halfords might give a longer warranty.

Yeah should be first course of action. If you get it to start and everything works fine then just buy a new batt, I got one for the GF from a factors for 79 euro a few days ago.

If it starts, charge it first, if that doesn't work, then get a new battery.

Yep. No motor factor will give you 3, 4 or even 5 years warranty on a battery unless it's also a very expensive battery with such warranty from the manufacturer.

I've killed (through misuse admittedly) a couple of batteries from Halfords. I've never had any aggro having them changed, and I even had one swapped last week for which the receipt couldn't be found... No hassle from them at all.

charge battery, take if for a long trip connected up to an another car and then put it back in to original vehicle. It'll come good again.
Batteries generally don't just go bad(not even in Renaults)
If you don't believe the battery has ever been mistreated then it can probably be saved.
