Delay on playback when trying to record using Reaper and Edirol UA25

    Hello all,

Just a quick query. I seem to be getting delayed playback when I'm trying to get a level in my headphones when I'm recording guitar (for example).

I'm not sure if this is a latency issue, as I checked the settings on Reaper and all seems good...(buffer size etc.)

So if I want to play back bass/drums/guitar and record/overdub guitar, I can't really get a proper level in the mix in my headphones for recording, as it seems to be delayed (just the armed track). This can be annoying as you hear what you are actually playing, but you then hear it slightly delayed back through the headphones as well.

If I turn down "direct monitoring" in the Edirol, this will obviously fix this, so I only hear what I have already recorded and what I am playing. However, it then means I can't record to a metronome/click...

    Two solutions:
    1) use ASIO drivers in Reaper, possibly setting the latency to a reasonable minimum
    or
    2) turn off monitoring in Reaper (the button with white loudspeaker icon next to the button, press it twice so that the button turns gray and the loudspeaker icon turns black)

Cheers kfotlman. I think I tried that already (turning off the monitoring in Reaper), but I'll go over it again to make sure...

Your problem, as kfoltman said, is that you aren't using ASIO drivers for your hardware. Basically, what's happening is there is a high latency time. This means that the time it takes for the sound to get from your guitar through the Edirol into the Reaper software, and back out through your sound card and into your headphones is very long. I don't fully understand how ASIO and its buffers work, but these drivers are designed to solve this problem. You just need to set your buffer size to something that's reasonable enough so that it doesn't cause your PC to crash and it also stops the delay. If anyone can shed some light on how ASIO works, that'd be great!
Good luck! You'll probably need it.
