A friend of mine who lives outside London is planning to cycle here next May. His journey will bring him to Rosslare (from Fishguard). He will then need to cycle to Kilkenny for an overnight before coming here (near Nenagh in Tipp) the next day. As he will be using panniers to carry his luggage it is important to avoid any serious climbs - are there any he should be aware of, or what route would people suggest from Rosslare to Kilkenny?

I couldn't say I know that area very well but I have cycled from Kilkenny to Rosslare once (with panniers). I remembered encountering some rolling hills but no challenging climbs, just an interesting variety.
I would recommend taking the N25 around Wexford and eastwards to New Ross (a pretty dull stretch but nice wide roads and he shouldn't get lost). From New Ross N30 and then R700 to Thomastown, Bennetsbridge and then Kilkenny. It's a 55mile route and pretty easy navigation wise and very scenic if I remember correctly.
Also, if he's looking for accommodation in Kilkenny I'd recommend the Kilkenny tourist hostel on parliament st. lovely georgian building and clean and friendly the one time I was there.

newross ,ferrybridge ,thomastown, bennetsbridge is a fairly bad road for cycling. a lot of HGVs moving fast on a narrow road also a savage climb at the old church .

look at enniscorthy, kiltealy, ballymurphy, boris, gowran, kilkenny .less cars and HGVs

its a lovely from spin from enniscorthy to boris ,i would do it quite often .it might be a bit longer but a far better route.

if your buddy is doing the spin on the weekend or early eve ,post it up. i might be out and about myself

Did it there a couple of months ago. I did kk to Wexford town and back. The best route is new ross Thomastown. I've done Kilkenny Thomastown Umpteen times and i'ts grand. If you like hills you'll love Kiltealy Ballymurphy
