Question About eBay.ie postage

    Hi,

Today I won an auction for a purse on eBay. The purse cost £42.

A few days ago (before I bid) I e-mailed the seller and asked how much it would cost to post the item to Ireland, and their respone was: £5 standard or £7 intl signed-for. I was hoping to go for standard.

So a few minutes ago I went to pay and just before the pay-confirmation page I see the seller has put postage at £7 intl signed-for.

So, what I'm wondering is, who should pay the extra £2 for signed postage? Me or the seller? I know it's only £2, but why should I pay for something I didn't request?

I bought a €50 3v voucher thinking my total would be £47 and I'd have €3 left over to cover the fx-commission fee's, but now the total is £49, I'd only have €1 left over to cover the fx-commission fee's, and I don't believe that €1 will be enough to cover them.

Even though I have €7 euros in my PayPal balance, PP will only allow me to use one form of payment, whereas on my mother's PP she cna use her CC and any funds in her PP account (that's if she has any money in there), and no, I can't use my mothers CC or PayPal for reasons which I won't post online.

I have e-mailed the seller and asked about this, but am still waiting for a response.

    Thanks for any help.

Just wait until he reads your e-mail and changes the postage.

I think the problem might be in the wording of the sellers email I guess he might have run you off a std responce so "£5 standard or £7 intl signed-for" really means non international is £5 but international is ALWAYS £7. I'd be with the seller on this one provided he didn't say anything specific like "To Ireland £5 std or £7 intl signed-for". You just have to be very specific in your questions to sellers about postage and follow up untill their reply is specific, otherwise don't bid.

If it is the higher amount ask the seller if he can remove or drop the shipping price on eBay's system so you can pay that amount with your 3V and then the differnce he wants directly via PayPal.

When you make the payment, it should automatically use the cash balance first, then go to a card for the remainder. If this doesn't happen, then there's something wrong.

Here is the entire response he/she sent me:
hi there.shipping is same as uk £5 unless you want it first class signed for .then it will be £7.regards

So, I took it that, standard shipping to Ireland is the same as it is to the UK, £5, but on the eBay invoice it is put at £7.

I got an email back today, and it said:
signed for shipping ireland is £5.25 thanks

But on the new invoice (s)he sent me it is still at £7.

    (S)he also said:
item has to be paid within 3 days .or will be relisted ..all them are posted signed for delivery thanku

That is what I thought, but it seems I was wrong.

Can you not just pay him £1.75 less when it goes to paypal?

I'd email him again and ask for a revised invoice with the lower postal rate so you can pay.

    How can I do that?

I don't have his/her PayPal email adress to send payment to, only a link on eBay/eBay invoice, where the postage is at £7 and obviously I can't change the anything on the invoice, only the seller can.

I think I will do that. I will just wait for a little while before doing that to see if I get a new invoice with lower postage. If I don't have anything by 8pm tonight, I'll do as you suggested.

Will let you know how I get on.

    Thank you.

It's been a while since I had to pay an invoice, thought you might still be able to change the amount when you actually get to paypal.
    My mistake!

I e-mailed the seller last night and asked for an invoice for revised postage, as of yet, I haven't received any reply.

If I don't receive a reply by 12 tonight, I might just email him/her and ask them to cancel my bid and see what he/she says.

Yes, I know I entered into a legal binding contract when I bid and won, but as I don't have enough money on the 3v voucher (when I added it to paypal, they took €1 off leaving me with €49 euros on it, so I definately don't have enough money on the voucher to pay for the item, As the total is £49.), had the postage been left at £5 instead of £7, I'd probably have had enough on the voucher to pay. As (obviously) £49 GBP doesn't equal €49 euros.

And yes, I know it's only £2, but that £2 has made a big difference now I do not have the suffecient funds on the voucher to pay, which isn't my fault, I though the postage was £5 (according to the sellers first response), not £7 and I didn't expect it to be put at that.

Also, I udnerstand the seller is only protecting themself incase the item got lost/misplaced by either RoyalMail/An Post, but, the seller should have stated in the listing that international shipping is signed-for only, and not standard as I was lead to believe.

I also realize I am leaving myself open to have a ban/non-paying bidder strike on my eBay account, but I don't think I have another option other than to take the chance unfortunately.

Thanks for all the help/suggestions. If anyone however has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

I will let you know how I get on.

    Thanks again.

    A €50 3V voucher wouldn't be enough for £47 which would be around €53.

Really? I didn't think there would have been that much of a difference.

Anyway, the only response/contact from the seller I have had is another invoice, with the total still at £49.

Checking the exchange rate is the first thing you should do.

you also get a worse exchange rate with paypal, always add a couple of extra euros to your budget on to what you think the total cost will be, saves the frustration of being short and having to find more funds which takes more time and adds more stress
