At the end of November I added to my collection of 3 dogs and 1 hamster and got a Chinchilla.

Trying to get pictures of him is not as easy as I thought it would be, he thinks he should be eating the camera.

    Are his/her eyes actually black?

A lot of potential and you're going to have a lot of fun photographing him/her, however I'm feeling the yellow in the picture ruins it.

Yip his eyes are jet black, the stick to his left is a treat to try and keep him in the one spot. Hopefully as he gets more use to his new home he will settle down a bit and I won't have to bribe him with treats.

This isn't a great pet photo - you use a direct flash and a portrait orientation that crops the chinchilla's whiskers.
