Usual offenders. Squier, Mexican Fenders, Ibanez, SX (if you're really stuck for cash) and Yamaha as population above suggested. Just keep an eye out on adverts and also gumtree.ie (seen some bargains there recently!!)

Try before you buy and all that stuff. :)

Just be careful - buying a poor quality bass will put you off the instrument forever.

well i've had an sx for about a year and half before i got a decent guitar but i know what you mean, doesn't bother me that much though, no keen on getting massively into playing bass, guitar is my main instrument and i wanna keep it that way, as i say i want a bass to just mess around on

I'd go for a Squier Precision. I still have the one I bought new for a massive £120 back in 1996 :). It's a pretty solid instrument and the stock pickups give a reasonable array of sounds. As with most things though, you get what you pay for.

Also, I'm curious as to how you intend to amplify it as you don't appear to have factored in the cost of an amp. Are you intending to run it through a guitar amp? If so, don't!

yeah a squire would be ideal alright but doesn't seem to be any for sale.

yeah em i'll probably get a cheap €30 amp, a friend of mine has said that i would be fine playing a bass through my guitar (MG 250) but i'm not bothered risking blowing one of the speakers but I don't spend much time plugging in my guitar so i doubt i'll be too bothered about plugging in the bass.

Do some research into sx basses. The quality is nothing compared to their guitars. I've had two of em, I'm currently using one as my main bass
sx = win! No better cheap bass out there.
Now, having said that, it is possible to get a bad one. Especially from the standard series. (they tend to be the ones out of the beginner box) Though, also having said that, I have a black jazz from the beginner pack and it was pretty good. Try getting your hands on a traditional or vintage series one. My one (below) plays like a Fender, Sounds like a fender, feels like a fender. (I kinda wish it was one tbh) and it cost me very little, brand new.

Don't be a gear snob, give em a try.

well thanks for that, i'm no gear snob, i own a sx guitar as i say which i do think is poop but i also own a aria zz-1 amazing guitar for the money, also a art & luthrie acoustic which supposely sounds close to a martin haven't checked myself though and since the other now own a cort action bass and wow it was a steal for 100, possibly the best instrument i own (for now) so yeah i've got a bass now but thats for the comments

also sorry but this is still me just using another account

The action basses are fantastic for the monies, they have the best electrics outta the cheap basses I've seen.

I picked up an Epiphone SG bass from Waltons which was on sale for €149 and am very impressed with it. I use it for some light recording work and while it's not the most versatile in the tone department it does the job quite well.

I use it through my Line 6 Toneport UX2 and with some careful EQ-ing have been delighted with the tone.
