I am looking for car insurance but as an 18yr old male it's very expensive the cheapest quote I've got so far is around €2000.....I am wondering is it possible for my mother to be insured as the main driver on both her car and mine and then for me to be named as the 2nd driver on my car?...

She can but if something happens and the insurance company start looking they could void your insurance as you'll be the main driver of car not her. Unfortunately when your young you have to pay big bucks or walk. The only way around it is to get a cheaper car to insure.

BTW most people have had to pay crazy money for insurance when they where younger, I know I did. But if you get your own policy now and pass your test, if not done already, then the price will start dropping fairly quick.

Bear in mind though that the insurance will not get much cheaper when you pass your test, as statistically more crashes happen when new drivers get their full licence (and are therefore able to drive on their own, and on motorways) than when they had their Learner Permit.

My brother got a good deal with Hibernian Aviva. He is 17, and got insurance on his mother's 1.3L Starlet as a named driver. With H. Aviva, he paid €400, which covered 10 lessons (with a Hib. Aviva instructor!). Once he got his first lesson, he got 6 months free insurance, provided his mother or father was in the car with him (a full licence driver is a requirement by law anyway). If he passes his test (he's still on a L.P.), he will get a year's insurance for €1,100.

However, the main disadvantage to getting insurance as a named driver rather than a policy of your own is that you don't earn any No-claims bonus that way. If you got your own policy, you would accumulate a no-claims bonus and it would get cheaper every year. However, getting a policy on your own is going to start very expensive, especially for an 18 year old male. But bear in mind that you can earn a no-claims bonus if you have a policy of your own, even if you are only on a L.P. as opposed to a full licence.

mate i would recommend you being the third named driver on the policy as your mother is first in her car go to some other insurance company i mean not the one with ur mother is insured in and ask them to insure your mother as first driver and then your dad and then urself. this is way i have done mine. me 17 yr old male. this way it becomes hell lot cheaper.
