if you lost 99% of all your music?

i killed my hard drive a few days ago and i had pretty much nothing backed up, so i lost pretty much all my music which i had been collecting over the past 6 or so years. it had the burns of all my old cds too which are now all lost, stolen or vanished, so its not just my dance music but all the music i have ever listened to. in total about 700 gigabites of music. (it could be worse, its not like someones dead or anything, iv just learned an important lesson..)

so what would you download first, if you were me?

A backup application. Then buy a NAS and a safe.

ha ha, so true. I have so little sympathy for people that don't back stuff up, so so little. Especially if that person is an IT professional, then I have none.

wasnt looking for sympathy.. just recommendations...

Start buying vinyl. Harder to lose.

Do iTunes or any of the download sites have any system of re-downloading anything you've bought if you lose it?

boomkat does, but that accounts for about .00005% of my music.

i actually am giving serious thought to abandoning non physical music. i think id actually appreciate and enjoy music more.

.....if your son was at home
Crying all alone on the bedroom floor
    'Cause he's hungry
And the only way to feed him is to
Sleep with a man for a little bit of money...
    :P:p

I gave the mp3 thing a go for a while but was just buying too much. You have no real sence of owning a track and it becomes too disposable IMO. I'd listen to a tune once and never see it again. Now I'm only buying stuff I really like and get to know the music I am buying better.

Maybe ask around your mates for sympathy, I'm sure they'll let you take any music they have and copy it. Then start buying everything else again I'm afraid...But in fairness you don't have to buy everything again, you'll be able to cover a lot of it with mates' collections, and I'm sure some of the rest of it you didn't listen to anyway.

Also, you are sure the drive is dead? Would be hilarious if six months down the line you got it going again:p

I'd start with all you're media players, dump them back to your machine, then go to friends, after that itunes and coffee are your friend.

Mate, the drive might have died buy all your files are most likely still retrievable. The fact that it died so suddenly would suggest a power fault with the drive. You will need to bring the drive to a Specialist who may be able to extract everything from the drive. If part of the drive is damaged with bad sectors, much of whats on the drive will still be retrievable. Try .........

I've lost some stuff before but nothing important and not in a long time. If my pc got stolen or something yeah I'd be pretty gutted. Sure I've loads of music but its easily replaceable and in fairness a total refresh of tunes might not the so bad.

Actually I have not backed up in ages so I'm going to do it now, thanks for the reminder.

seal the hard-drive in a container, throw it in the freezer for 24 hours

the chances of this working are slim but its worth a shot and has come up trumps before

I recently had the same thing thingt happen to me, I contacted Beatport and Traxsource and they let me re download everything which I bought off them. I was chuffed, although I've only been a digital dj 12months.

    +1

And at 700GB, there's no way you'll really miss every single bit of it, right?
