A collection of some of Joe's finest moments to date:

Do you think he will become one of the all time greats with his talent?

or will the fact that Galway might not win much silverware hamper his legacy? (the greats like Ring, DJ, Whelehan etc. all had the medals in their pockets when they finished playing)

i think joe canning will become one of the greats..ok last season he wasn't as brilliant as he usually is but he was still top-scorer in the championship, which is not too shabby!
he has already shown a great amount of skill in just his first two seasons of senior inter-county hurling and he seems to be taking it all in his stride.
i think galway will win silverware in the next few years while joe canning is playing so i don't think that will hamper his legacy at all.:D

He has been carrying an ongoing niggly injury though, something he will need to get sorted out sooner or later.

People often remark that he gets a large percentage of his scores from frees. That is true, although his scoring return from play is hardly too bad either. But he often scores frees that few if any other players would score, his conversion rate must be in the order of 95%, from any distance or angle, and that gets overlooked. His vision and ability to bring other players into the game is also top class.

Canning won't be mentioned in the same way as, say, Shefflin or Tommy Walsh for that matter. The biggest reason for this, IMO, is that Galway wont win an All-Ireland Senior title during his playing career. He will be left to "carry the can" for many years, and while I have no doubt that he will score a huge amount from frees etc. he wont have an All-Ireland Senior inter-county medal to show for it. He could well be remembered as the "greatest player never to win an All-Ireland medal".

However, he will gain fame etc. from the fact that he will have been part of the one of the best club sides of all time and could well end up with 4 or 5 All-Ireland club titles to his name.

Apparently a Connacht rugby contract is on the table for him but he wants to win an All-Ireland title first

That's a highly speculative call to make. Canning in all probability will play for another 10 years. Considering Galway won Minor in 2004, 2005 & 2009, as well as U21 in 2005 and 2007 it is very likely that at some stage in the next decade they will win a senior All-Ireland.

We've been winning Minors for years but haven't managed to turn that into fruition at Senior level.

got within a few points in 2 finals over the last 10 years without Joe Canning. Arguably both finals that could have been won if a player of Joe's calibre was in the maroon.

    Sure time will tell.

My money would be on that as well. The old cronies who refused to accept John McIntyre (mainly because he was a Tipp man) as manager a few years ago are now well out of the way, as is their antiquated mindset. I think McIntyre will harness the undoubted talent that is currently in Galway. They are, IMHO, a better bet than Cork or Tipp to conquer the Cats in the next 2/3 years.

Maybe it is a "highly speculative call to make", but are Galway not a highly speculative team. One day they could go toe-to-toe with KK and come out on the right side of a result. The very next day they could get absolutly wallpoed by the same opposition - there is no consistency to them at all.

As a galwayman myself, I would loved to be proven wrong and that Galway win an All-Ireland hurling title soon (maybe even a few) but being realsictic they will be lucky to reach an All-Ireland final in the next 5 years. Galway have squandered numerous underage teams over the last 2 decades. Out of winning 6 or 7 minor and a few U-21 All-Irelands since the early 90's, we could only manange to put together 2 All-Ireland finalist teams (and, IMO, the 2001 one was a fluke as beat Derry and then caught KK on the hop).

Also in Galway, we have too many small nice forwards who can't win the ball for themselves and look for the big lad to get it for them. Now, I'll admit that Canning can hold his own, but then are we not "robbing Peter to pay Paul." His skill etc. would be wasted by getting the ball for the other forwards who down through the years have failed to perform in a Galway Senior jersey (Damien Hayes and Niall Healy being 2 prime examples). What I'm getting at is that Canning would win an All-Ireland if he was playing with the team over the border (Tipp) as they have a panel of players who will take on the opposition and look for scores themselves. At the moment, its Joe Canning and 14 other fellas who are filling jersey's, IMO - with the possible exception of the brother Ollie.

Not too sure about that now. Don't think Joe will switch to Rugby. he's not fat, over-grown, matted-haired, Americanized, money grabbing or toffee-nosed enough to join ex-British colony winter sport.

I actually lol'd at this... And thats not a good thing :pac:

I think Joe will do well in the future, Galway will be there or thereabouts for another few years I'd say and the media are on his side which will always give him plenty of attention.
His skill with dead ball is brillient, you could say he has brought the sideline points back into the game and he is scoring frees from all over the pitch.
His injury is whats going to be the test though Id say, see how long he can hold up before he has to do something about it.

Also just thinking of it now, he'll have to prove that hes a real 'hardy' hurler coz hes going to have many matches where the teams are going to set a player on him to "man mark" him or to "rough him up" a bit and see how he takes it.
It'd be intresting to see what kinda a hurler he'll be in another few years though.

    /biased-ness

No, but he's a supreme athlete in his prime. Don't over react if he decides hurling is not the be all.

the worrying thing for Joe is this massive injury he has that needs him to take alot of time off, but he wont do that...that could ruin his career..

and to right off galway as having no chance of all ireland in the next 10-15 years is madness....i believe they willl win one in the next 3 years..
