Setting up a Club

Me and a few like minded grumpy 'ole b'stards have been discussing the notion of setting up a club catering for smallbore pistol & rifle a bit closer to home. We have looked on the Garda website and read the regs but these give no indication of the nitty gritty requirements for backstops/baffles etc.

The disused farmyard across the road from my house has a silage pit (empty) and could be the basis for a 25M range at least. It also has another great asset - a cash strapped owner!

Any ideas on where to start would be welcome - there are 12 of us interested at the moment.

Go for it. The more ranges the better. Where are you located?

Talk to RRPC on here - he's the guru for short-range smallbore. And/or ring Justice and talk to John Guinane, the official range inspector.

Others will I'm sure be along shortly who know much more detail, but don't forget that these days, the Range and the Club must be two separate entities.

Some reading to be going on with:

    Firearms licensing - FRPC1 - English

Been on that road myself.Sorry to urinate on the parade but it isnt just a question of getting a location. It has to be suitable to both Gardai and county councils!!Either one will throw the entire tool box in the works to prevent this going ahead.I had help from another boards member in this plan, and if he allows it ,I will PM you his handle. Then with all the H&S, security requirements etc,you would really want to be double damn sure you can get members at a reasonable price to pay for this.Look at this more as a busisness rather than an enjoyment ,because that is what it will be in the end,and you will save yourself much headaches and money going in with that view.
    From experiance my 2cents.

What I was told by my local County Council was that a range for a members only club, that is not open to the general public doe's not need planning unless you are changing the site from what it was before, ie building a new back stop, putting in permant plumbing etc.

If you open it to the public then it must have full planning permission,

Wish you luck, I'd advice getting someone to draw up your out line plans that has done plans for a range before and got them passed.

The main thing is will the lads fork out money each year to cover running costs? The NARGC were really helpful to us in Kerry when we had a range going in North Kerry, they did us up letters covering the land owner against any claim etc. Countryside Alliance are more for, if you need to give day insurance to folks on a once off, which the NARGC dont do, and a members only club would not need any way.

    All the best

    HJ:)
