Bent Wishbone?

Hi all, had a little crash this morning in the Almera. Was going around a corner and the car skidded out on the ice. Went straight into the kerb on the passenger side. Was quite a hard shunt. Went out and checked it and it seemed ok. Small bit of damage to the tyre and rim, but no cracking anywhere that I could see.

Drove on again for another minute slowly until I needed to turn a corner. I heard a grinding noise. Pulled over and checked the wheel again. I then noticed that it has been pushed back about an inch at most. The grinding noise was the tyre rubbing against the arch. It drives fine in a straight line, and the wheels arent off camber or anything, from what I could see. Just seems to have been pushed backwards.

Does this seem like a bent wishbone or something worse? If it is a bent wishbone what is the likely cost of repair?

    Thanks

Sounds very much like the wishbone is bent, there as might
be other damage to other suspension parts.
Get the wheel off and have a good look. If you need a wishbone
(guessing you will), ring a few scrapyards and the main dealers
got stung buying one last yera from the scrapyard, main dealer
    was cheaper!

Im hoping its just the wishbone and not tie rods or anything else. What did it cost you for the part? Did you put it on yourself?

Yep, did it myself and my Dad. It was a Ford Focus. Secondhand wishbone
and a rubber bracket that connected to the anti-roll bar.
€60 for the parts. Only found out later that it would have bein cheaper to get them from Ford. D'oh. So try Nissan then the breakers. Took about
2 or 3 Hours to do. Hope that helps

Thanks for that. I may ship it off to a mechanic to get it done. It would happen just as Im getting back to work on Monday, not 2 weeks ago when I had loads of time off to do it!

Anyone know a decent indy mechanic in the Clondalkin/Lucan area?

I know of a chap up the Boot road in Clondalkin. He works in the rear of a house but always busy with work. His names Tony 014591312. If he's too busy call Sean Kavanagh's garage on the Fonthill road 014573088. I've used both in the past and recommend them excellent 100%. :)

Im literally 2 minutes away from Sean Kavanaghs! Got stuck at the corner beside his earlier today and needed a push. Ill pop over there at some point.

    Thanks

Wishbones are very easy to change, nothing serious at all. I changed one on my fathers Nissan Bluebird about 10 years back, I was only 16 at the time and it was piss easy..Maybe 1.5 hours labour though to do it.

Problem is that I don't know if it's just the wishbone! Going to take off the wheel today and have a look. What should I be looking out for?

Take off the wheel on the opposite side if you not sure what to look you, then anything out of place will stand out.

And don't forget to use axle stands

I took mine off to get an ncps clamp off the car :-) Clamp me? How dare they. You might benefit from getting it up on a ramp, you could have damaged the tie rod or the damper too

Ha I have 3 of them in the garden, they said on the phone that they don't negotiate!

More to the point, you'll see whats bent, hopefully its not on the chassis. If your not sure take the other wheel of and compare

Problem is I have nowhere to get a decent look at the car. Ony place I have is the driveway which has a slight incline, so dont fancy jacking it up on that, especially the fact its covered in ice. Might just pop around Sean Kavanaghs later on.

Hi,I'm new to this forum so would love a bit of feedback on the problem I'm facing.I was driving up to nuig this morning from clare, and I ended up taking the corner of a kerb too fast approaching the roundabout there after clarinbridge and before oranmore, as i underestimated how slippy the road was,the kerb was on the left and as i broke suddenly,i started to skid and to avoid the kerb i turned to the right and ended up rocking over the raised triangle platform on the road.had it sent to a garage in oranmore,as i wasn confident of goin further with it.turns out the wishbone is bent in the front two tyres of the car.of course wasnt i goin to go to my dealer this evening,to get them to have a look at the brakes, because the brake light symbol had come up yesterday evening and now this happens.what do ye reckon is there any chance because of the problem with the brakes that the dealer will cover the costs.prob not as i have no photographic proof of the brake light symbol coming up in the car?how much do you think it would cost to repair the wishbones in the front of the car and the service.would i be better off ringing the insurance company and have them sort and end up having a claim on the car or pay myself what do ye think lads?

What car is it? Year, model and engine? Most likely you've bust the wire connected to the 'sensor' in the pads. Is it an abs light or one of these

    or these

Let me get this straight, you had a brake warning lamp show yesterday evening and you booked a slot for this evening for the dealer to check it out; but in the meantime you crashed into a traffic island because of your misjudgement. Why would it even cross your mind to ask if the dealer might pay for your accidental damage? Is there something missing from your story???

I think he/she means sort the brake light out under warranty. I could have it wrong though.

its a 06 ford focus lx hatchback.the symbol on the bottom left interslice, the one with the exclamation mark in the middle. This came up on tuesday evening on my way home from galway. However i could not go to the dealer because it was too late.It was around half seven in the evening, and the next day i had college at 10 in the morning so i wouldnt have had time to leave it in that morning either,so thats why i was goin to leave it in wed afternoon on my way home from coll.Hindsight's a great thing!Maybe I phrased it wrong, what i meant was the dealer could fix up my brake problem as the car is under warranty,i have no problem paying for the damages, mite pay out of my own money rather than through my insurance which would go through the roof.i got the car on the 2nd of february.and the brake light symbol that came up was'nt at a fault of my my own.I'm waitin on a call back from them now to see what the estimate on the repair will be.I did the right thing by leavin it in the garage because i had to get into coll and the only way i would have made it in was by getting the bus as i could'n have takin a chance with the car.

Has anyone had any dealings with fahy's garages in oranmore?and how much would a new wheel cost, would it be 400 euros?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭Donnelly117

A new alloy wheel and tire could run to 400 quid depending on the size and spec of the tire.
You should probably put this in a new thread by the way, this one is about 4 years old

I don't think i can Donno,a new requirement is after being introduced by the heads of the board saying that you have to have 25 posts before you can start a new thread unfortunately i only have 4,perhaps i am missing something.just found out there that a alloy wheel would cost 207 before vat,vat could be bout 40 euro so thats roughly €250.also the person said that a second hand wishbone from another dealer would be 100 euros but a ford one would be 328.that sounds very dear.there goin emailing me on the details now to let me no.

Parts were cheaper new from the main dealer than scrappies. Well worth calling both.
