So we're into January, which means the new Magnetic Fields album is out at the end of the month!

Have only heard Everything is One Big Christmas Tree from the album (which is a typically sarcastic and amusing Christmas song, with an hilarious German language bit) and can't wait to hear the rest. Distortion has some of the best songs of their career (The Nun's Litany, Three-Way, California Girls) so let us hope Merritt et al keep up the high standards!

Anyone listened to this yet? Don't think its as strong as Distortion was after a couple of listens. Some of the songs are fantastic (favourites so far are You Must Be Out of Your Minds and the Dada Poker - familiar territory for Merritt but oh so joyfully cynical and witty) but others don't really seem to have a chance to shine given the brief running times of the songs (most are considerably less than 3 minutes). Thematically, though, it is very successful, showing up the 'falsity' of folk music - particularly in the two songs mentioned already, Seduced and Abandoned, From A Sinking Boat and We're Having A Hootenanny. Overall, definitely closest in style to 69 Love Songs.

Still, despite the slight disappointment of some of the songs, can't wait to see the band in March :)

I've only listened to it once and I wasn't bowled over. Will need to give it a few more listens before I comment again.

Bought it yesterday and hearing it on a stereo I really like it.

"You can't go round just saying stuff, because it's pretty. And I no longer drink enough, to think you're witty"

I always love the first time you hear sarky Magnetic Fields lyrics :) Album isn't quite as compelling as their best, but still a good few songs that have that Stephin Merritt golden touch.

As good a place as any to post this: a documentary about Stephin Merrit called Strange Powers will be showing in the IFI on 17th April as part of their documentary festival. Linky. Should be worth checking out to try and understand one of contemporary music's most unusual characters.

Was at their gig in the Barbican in London last week, was so very good. Nice that the film will be getting a big-screen screening too!

I heard about that film last week but I never knew it would be over here. Cheers for that!
