Most "insiders" don't "mark out" too often unfortunately. I think everyone on these boards knows that wrestling isn't "real" but ala Cena returning at the Rumble there is still a sence of surprise at times.

You seem to be contradicting yourself slightly though... i'd imagine that if you were just a normal fan like you say you are, you'd mark out alot?

next monday im going to mark out like a ten year old watching Cena vs the bad guy from Harry Potter (I should know his name really), when Bret "The Hitman" Hart returns.

Im 24 and although I would not consider myself a mark there are certain people / occasions I do mark out for and tbh that is the same for most people even the smarkiest of smarks will mark out to some extent if their fav wrestler wins the title for example or makes an unexpected return.

    what does marking out mean?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

I think the word "mark" and "mark out" have become terribly misused. I know I certainly mis use then.

A mark is someone who supposedly belives wrestling is real, and mark out is supposedly having your disbelief so suspended that you get genuinely excited by a predeteremined conclusion. For example, I know I "marked out" massive when Eddie Guerrero won the World Title from Brock, it was an amazing moment.

When I say I am a "mark" for Bryan Danielson what I really mean is that I am a massive fan who can do little wrong in my eyes.

I am 31, everyyone who knows me knows I am wrestling fan.

    oh jesus!

anyone who is on a message board and who posts regularly is a mark. that is not a bad thing...monday night we will all mark out....i personally am a mark and i dont see it as a problem.

when the glass breaks or the start of hitmans music happens i am always up out of my chair!

if you have a favourite wrestler and will not take criticism on it, then your a mark...

Well if you include "smark" as "mark" as well :) I guess smarks are the biggest marks of all because we spend much more time educating ourselves on a live-action TV show.

There are plenty of people who just watch the show and read up nothing about it (marks) and plenty of those who watch the show and read the news, but don't actually know much about wrestling - but try to argue inanely anyway (the worst type of mark) and the very, very few people who watch lots of wrestling, read up on the backstage/dirtsheets and actually know what they're talking about (smarks or smart marks).

I should also mention that "mark" is a derogatory term for a wrestling fan who you think is an idiot and actually knows nothing about wrestling - i.e. cheers and boos for whoever Vince/WWE want him to.
if you have a favourite wrestler and will not take criticism on it, then your a mark...

That's true! If someone's unwaiveringly biased towards a particular wrestling company or wrestler (and says every other wrestling company or wrestler is sh*te) then I'd class them as a shill - someone incapable of having a honest discussion about wrestling. I know there's a few shills here LOL!!! :pac::pac::pac:

I'm 26, I very rarely mark out big-time but the last time I did was quite recent (when Sheamus won the WWE title) but honestly I rarely mark out these days -- actually this year more than most, because I started watching ROH with Davey Richards, and KENNNNNNTAAAAAAA as well who had me marking out on more than one occasion.

Besides marking out to amazing in-ring work, I remember marking out to Cena coming back at the Rumble (I'm so ashamed of that!), Tripper losing to Orton at WM (whatever that one was)...both of Hogan's latest SSlam matches...First two One Night Stands...Hogan vs Rock @ WMX8 would be my biggest mark out moment.

Thats such a great point.. but i hate both smark and mark terms, they're both so derogatory, as far as im concern EVERYONE who watches/posts about/reads about Wrestling is a fan, nothing-more nothing less.. obviously some fans are far more educated than others, but thats everyones personal prerogative.

The last time I marked out was when Sheamus won the WWE Title off Cena. T'was a great day to be an Irish wrestling fan.

I don't mark out anymore really. It's hard to suprised by anything outside the ring but I do enjoy great matches. I don't mark out but I'd think to myself "That was great" etc.

Exactly,I'm the same way. With the internet and spoilers and whatnot,it is had to get that shock value element, especially with the current WWE product. I'm 30 now and I reckon the last time I marked out was during the Taker/Shawn match at Wrestlemania. So much back and forth action.

I agree! A new thing that i've marked out to (since WWE don't have that many mark out moments) is people battering each other in ROH or NJPW/AJPW. It's like "holy crap!!". I know it's hard to get into "foreign" wrestlers because there's a lack of emphysis on characters and even a language barrier, but holy crap... KENTA Nakajima.

I'm new to ROH and KENTA but I FLIPPED OUT watching these matches :

    1. KENTA vs Nakajima - NOAH 1st March 20092. KENTA vs Davey Richards - Supercard of Honor IV - April 2009)
also these two :4. Danielson v McGuinness - ROH Rising Above 20095. MMG vs Ryusuke Taguchi & Prince Devitt (NJPW Circuit 05.07.2009)Can I post links to these matches? I don't wanna be banned!

    Good lad.
I mark out regularly, don't see anything wrong with that.

I'm also unashamedly a smark, again nothing wrong with that. I laugh at anyone who posts on a wrestling forum that regularly discusses the background workings of WWE thinking they're not a smark to be honest. Because by definition you are.

Much as I would like to say yes, yes you can, I am unsure as the copyright issues involved. If they are youtube links, then knock yourself out, if there are rapidshare/megaupload please do not until I can clarify the issue.

couldnt of said it better! as far as im concerned if your not in the wrestling business/industry and being in the business does not include writing a blog or column online somewhere, you have no business using those terms 'mark' or 'marking out'! I detest those terms esp being used by people who have no right to.
And besides those terms were invented so wrestlers could speak to each other when pro wrestling was being portrayed as real and not sports entertainment now everybody knows it is entertainment, so there is no need to use them today!

I mark out for European wrestlers and French Canadians like Sylvain Grenier. Actually I quite like Canada, I always thought of it as the cooler version of USA(English and French speaking and more 'European') however you can't package them together as closely as European wrestlers as there is so many of them(in US wrestling)

AJ Styles I just mark out all the time when his theme music hits.

The fact that you know this makes you a smark.:)
