    Hi All,
Can anyone tell me how to get subtitles on DTT? Aertel 888 does not work and subtitles button on TV remote does not seem to work.

I am using a Samsung LE37B530 TV with aerial pointing to Truskmore.

They're not broadcasting subtitles on DTT at the moment. It was turned off a few months ago.

They were broadcasting it, but the timing was a few seconds too early.

The Teletext pages have reverted back to the analogue style as well (just recently?)

You could send an email to subtitle at rte.ie querying the availability of subtitles on DTT ...
    - I did this once and noticed that there was an improvement to the subtitling for a day or two before being reverted back to the usual out-of-sync issue and now being taken off the air. So, yes, you can blame me for the lack of subtitles :D

I am using LG 32LH3000, aerial pointing to Three Rock. Using both TV and satellite receiver (combo) DTT tuners to pick up DTT.

Spoke a bit too early ...

Now able to receive subtitles on RTE 2 via both TV & sat receiver's dtt tuner (teletext's 888).

No go on RTE1 (except via analogue signals).

Thanks for that. I'll drop them a mail and see what they say.
Would be nice to have this working.

My Sony V4500 has started to display subtitles properly.

Subtitles can be displayed by going to Aertel p.888 or using the Sony R/C pressing the subtitle button which automatically displays p.888.

Can anyone confirm if (MHEG-5) Digital Aertel is displaying subtitles properly. (Digital teletext doesn't work on my TV in Ireland setting).

Yeah MHEG-5 teletext subtitles work fine and in sync. Nice hi-res smooth fonts.

I just noticed now if you press the Blue button the latest headline pops up on the bottom of the screen, and if you want to read more you just press Enter. Nice feature.

I've a Mvision HD300. When pressing the blue button last night the subtitles on the RTE1 9pm news were delayed/slow by a second or so but were fine on RTE2. Didn't seem to be any on TV3 but then do they have any normally?. My transmitter is Maghera.

Live subtitling will always have slight delay, movies etc. should not have a delay.
TV3 subtitling of programmes has never been good.

Do you use the UK setting on your TV? I cannot get Digital Text (MHEG-5) with the Ireland setting.

I'm sure not that subtitles will work the same on DTT as before, or maybe they haven't finalised it.
On my Sagem Picnic, I can call up the MHEG5 Aertel, but there is nothing on p888 (says "No Page"). However, it does have a dedicated button for subtitles on the remote, and when you use this, an RTE 888 in green appears on the top right of the screen, and you can choose to show subtitles or not using a menu that appears. It's a bit hit and miss though, ie last night I couldn't get them to go away, but now when I select them they disappear after the first sentence.
I don't recall seeing these options when I originally got DTT, so maybe they've just been added.
Also, the Picnic can decode the old style Aertel as well as MHEG5, so that might be confusing matters.

Same happens to me when I input 888 in digital text, I get a "No Page" message. Pressing the Subtitle button gets no response.

With regard to digital text (Cush) I used to have no digital text when Ireland was selected originally, but this rectified itself after a while and I do get it now. (There was also a problem with the fada's on the EPG but this works fine now as well). If you have not done so already, you could try changing your country setting to France and see if the digital text works.

Digital subtitles does not work the same way as analogue via a text page 888.

On all digital receivers capabale of digital subtitles there will be a separate function/button to enable the digital subtitles which is unconnected with digital teletext. If your subtitles button kicks into Aertel 888 then the unit is programmed for analogue subtitles only.

On the Sagem "Picnic" STB, at present bringing up subtitles for RTÉ One, RTÉ Two, TV3 or TG4 is bringing up subtitles derived from WST Teletext, however for the UK Freeview channels, the same function is bringing up the standard DVB subtitles (bitmaps). This suggests to me that the Irish channels do not yet have a DVB subtitle stream although other posts on this thread suggest otherwise (they are not MHEG powered unless it is a standard I'm not familiar with) and in the absense of such they are using teletext as a fall back.

DVB subtitles is not connected with MHEG and works on all standard combo boxes I have come across.

So there are subtitles on RTE DTT, however you won't see them unless your receiver can decode the old style Aertel, which the combo boxes can, the Picnic can, but maybe some whizz-bang MPEG4 tvs can't?
I've checked on my setup again, and the subtitles are exactly the same as from analogue terrestrial.

Checked out the subtitles this evening and to confirm I'm receiving both standard teletext subtitles (888) and DVB Subtitles. Both subtitles can be displayed on screen at the same time. As Bob Harris posted yesterday "nice hi-res smooth fonts" with the DVB Subtitles.

On TV3 with no subtitles broadcast I get the following "TV3 888" in the top right hand corner with both teletext and DVB. TG4 can get a bit confusing, this evening on Ros na Rún - english subtitles on screen and irish subtitles with both teletext and DVB stream.

DVB Subtitles can be hard selected on thru the main menu or by pressing the dedicated subtitle button on the R/C as required.

This from the Minimum Receiver Requirements

Compared to NorDig Unified 2.0 basic profile specification, the following major additional minimum requirements and clarifications are applicable for all IRDs:

    o DVB HD Subtitling

    5.4. DVB and Teletext Subtitling

The IRD shall be capable of decoding both DVB Subtitling and Teletext subtitling and display using the OSD capabilities whilst decoding the full television service (video and audio) to which it is associated (as specified in NorDig Unified specification section 7). Note the IRD is not required to display both DVB and teletext subtitling at the same time.

The user shall be able to select primary and secondary subtitling language.

Note: As set out in the in the NorDig specification, if both DVB-subtitling and Teletext subtitling are received simultaneously for one service the IRD shall only display the DVB-subtitling stream.

There are digital subtitles on RTE DTT which does not need Aertel. It could be to do with how RTE is flagging them in the broadcast stream if some TVs are having difficulty. All DVB-T TVs would have Digital subtitle capability. It is not new and has been there more or less since the beginning of the standard years ago.

I have a LG LF7700 MPEG4 LCD and the digital subtitles does work on Freeview and Freesat mode.
On DTV tuner mode, which is Freeview and RTE DTT, I get subtitles on UK Freeview channels but when I select RTE1, RTE2, TV3 and TG4 it does not show any digital subtitles
but on my Humax LCD digital the digital subtitles works on 3 channels, RTE1, RTE2, TG4 on the digital tuner mode. it is not AERTEL 888 subtitles but digital subtitles.
Any idea as to why LG is not showign digial subtitles on RTE DTT?

Tonight I have Subtitles and teletext on RTE 1 ,2, & TG4 on my (non MHEG5) Clarke-Tech 5000 Combo. It just gets better. What about TV3? (Maybe the testcard is better, but only if it is 16:9).

Are people still having problems with DVB Subtitles on DTT? Did they change something in the last couple of months as this used to work fine.

RTENL guys if reading this can you sort this one as it should be pretty standard. On some combo boxes FTA satellite DVB Sutitles are perfect but the RTE DTT ones are not picked up at all. Its the same software and the same standard so there should be no difference.

I'm able to see the subtitles via the TM6900CS+ receiver and the TV (LG, 32LH3000 - both MHEG & Data). Receiving signals from Three Rock. It has being like this for the past month or two.

I am not receiving digital subtitles on my LG LF77** but on my freeview TV with MPEG-2, I can received digital subtitles but no picture.
while the Humax MPEG-2 does show digital subtitles and also AERTEL 888 subtitles, again sound only and no pictures...
I am receiving from CH on UHF 47

On the Mvision combo I have had DVB subtitles on RTE1, RTE2 and TV3 at various times this morning. I noticed on TV3 that the subtitles were ahead of the picture/sound by several seconds.

Just received the Argus combo receiver. It is having trouble with RTE1's subtitles - they flash on screen ... RTE2's stay on screen as they should.
RTE2's is the same as per RTE1.

However, I still standby that my TV display's RTE1's subtitles without flashing them.
