Mini Cooper - cracked petrol tank??

Hi all, I drive a 2004 Mini Cooper. After the bad weather recently I happened to take a look under the rear of the car today and it looks like (what I think is) the petrol tank might be cracked and/or corroded.....

Any suggestions as to whether I should stop driving the car straight away... and/or how much it will potentially cost to fix?

Thanks in advance for all of your help...

    Is it leaking petrol?

Id imagine it would be expensive enough to replace, a hour or two labour and the cost of the tank, then the petrol.

If its not leaking I wouldnt be too worried.

+1 on what Kona said. If it's not leaking, don't stress.

If you're stuck however, there's a guy over on the forum I run - The Mini Club of Ireland - breaking a MINI for spares, you'd get a tank grand and handy from him.

Thanks for the advice, it doesn't seem to be leaking petrol but i'm not much of an expert on cars so just worried about doing further damage... i'll keep an eye on it to see if it's leaking and might try get a mechanic to take a look at it as well I suppose... here's a picture if that helps!

Thats not your fuel tank, that's part of your exhaust system.

Yes that there is your back box,is the Exhaust noticeably louder lately? or is there any blowing?

A good exhaust centre might be able to patch it up for you.

I know you said you are no car expert but the tailpipe coming out of it is a dead give away : ) (sorry i jest)

Shows how much I know! Nope, didn't reverse into anything.... recommendation is a new exhaust system?

Any ideas if that's a really expensive job? / if it's bad to drive the car with the exhaust like that?

Yea, there has seemed to be more exhaust fumes lately alright...

would not wory at all. exausts get hot and cold all the time. hence the outer metal "peeling".

That's a hole in the exhaust - not the outer metal peeling.

OP - you need an new silencer. Give anyone of the exhaust places a call, or if you're stuck I can probably track a used one down for you too.

Common prob on de minis, haven't seen the pic on my phone, but 25tops should have a new bracket and the rubbers fitted. Get the right one, ie make sure they don't order a cooper s fitted bracket. Edit- D'oh, obviously the pic shows a hole in the box. Ignore the 25euro bracket suggestion so.

No it's not. In my 9 years around MINIs, I've seen only 3 cars with exhaust issues. This is the third.

    25 Euro for a backbox?
