    Hi Guys,
Hippy New Year and all that!

As some of you know I picked up an old heavily modded SG last year, basically it's a '68 Junior that had a neck pickup added at some point, making it a Special I suppose, then both Gibson P90s swapped out for some Bareknuckles.
The pots were useless in terms of gradient, ie it was all or nothing, and whoever modded it wired it up with two vols but no tone. So I replaced the old CTS500's and orange ceramic cap with CTS250's and a good quality PIO cap (followed some not too hot advice!), but alas it aint right. Now its too mellow with hardly any bite, to the point where theres little tonal variation between the bridge & neck p'up. I can't see what value the cap is - so do any of you know what value should work well with the 250 pots and restore that P90 growl and bite?
    Kev.

I think part of the problem is that you're using 250K... I'll just check my Jr. to see what the value is. I think it may be 350K or 500? Gibson are weird like that. I'll try see the cap value too.

The capacitor is 0.02uF, not sure about the pots. There's nothing on them except the date code. I tried measuring them but that didn't work, apparently you have to desolder them to do that.

I say put the 500K's back in there and wire it up correctly. What value is the cap you bought?

Thanks for checkin Dord. I've been scanning through my e-mails when I ordered the stuff and can't seem to find anything about what value the cap is, but from memory I'm nearly sure it was 0.02uf as well. The damn thing is soldered in nice and snug and I can't see the writing on it! I remember ringing Doc J and his Bacchus has the 500k pots and the 0.02uf cap in there.

Ah well, I'm headin up home in a few days and my mate who does these kind of jobs for me is gonna experiment with a few different value caps and see if we can find a winner. Hopefully that'll get her up and running, she's been neglected for months now in favour of the Hamer :(

Yeah, definitely put back in the 500 k pots. What you are hearing has a lot less to do with the cap value than the loading of the pickup.

suggested parts for a les paul junior type guitar

    .022 cap

    500k vol

    250k tone pot

    so say RS guitar works,
