Analogue Tuning Problem with new TV

Hi just picked up a new TV in sales, cannot get it to tune in.

We previously had an old portable in the same spot and it picked up the irish channels fine with a rabbit ears mini aerial.

However the new TV is not picking up anything. Location is near Naas.

It does have both analogue and digital tuners. Manual tune but only search canot type in a frequency directly.

On the setup menu there is no option for Ireland. I have tried tuning for both UK and France but makes no difference. The options include BG, DK, I, L .. have tried them all at this stage.

Why would the old TV pick it up fine but the brand new one can't? Should I bring the TV back to shop?

Is analogue about to be phased out anyway - would I have to go freesat or sky by the end of the year either way? In which case I might just go freesat now.

    Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Analogue is not due to be switched off to 2012 at the earliest. The weather may be a prob at the mo. I know that there were problems at Kippure. Three Rock is fine

Digital is on at the moment on an engineering/roll out basis (about 75% of the country are already covered). You should receive both in Naas.

It will always be free on terrestrial. You most certainly do not have to subscribe to Sky to get the Irish Terrestrial Stations. It wont be on Freesat that is a British operation.

    What model TV is it.

It is a "Neon" TV/DVD combi. Found another reference to it as "Cello" - http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/248558/neon-cello-19-lcd-tv-with-freeview-?page=2

Forgive my ignorance but can I get digital over an internal aerial? i.e. the rabbit ears. Or do I need a roof aerial / satellite dish to pick up digital?

Your in Naas. Okay the digital tuner wont work here. Its a freeview tuner. It uses technology called MPEG2. We use MPEG4 for Irish Digital broadcasts. That part of the TV wont work. You would have be in a part of the country that would get overspill from the UK or NI (border areas toNI or parts of Wexford from Wales). Essentially this is geared for operation in the UK.

The analogue tuner on this will also be UHF only. What channnels and frequencies were you receiving on the old TV ? If they were all from UHF (and not VHF) then you should receive the same on the new one.

I presume you have connected rabbit ears mini aerial to this ?

Follow the instructions for first time installation again.

Thanks again for replies and advice.

Old portable working away fine in same spot with same aerial.

From what I'm hearing I think I need to bring this back for the following reasons:

    - Very poor if any analogue reception from rabbit ears
    - MPEG2 set so will never pick up Irish digital even on correct aerial (?)
    - UHF only tuner so cannot get all irish analogue stations either

it seems this box might work in Skyland but otherwise is too UK configured to be much good for my purposes. Think will return to shop and ask about alternate models.

One giveaway may be there is no 'Ireland' country option in setup.

Does that seem a correct synopsis of the situation? Thx again

It's possible the TV is only picking whatever crappy analogue signal it can find from Three Rock. It might have no VHF tuner in use when the UK mode is selected.

Hi I bought Cello tv from Tesco and have spent 3 days phoning Tesco, Ntl etc and today I finally got through to the manufactors in the UK. This tv was made for UHF frequency in the Uk and will not work on analogue tv in Ireland without a decoder. Ive phoned Tesco to complain and their responce.... Well most people have digital tv.!
Well not all of us have and it should state that this is only for digital tv. Thankfully I have receipt so Im off now for my refund.

Given it won't work with the Irish Digital TV system, that's a pretty poor attitude. I'd tell them you're dropping a line to your local newspaper and TD pointing out they are selling goods not fit for purpose in Ireland.

Are you sure this TV does not have VHF tuning? If it has system BG, DK etc it must have VHF. Try selecting country Germany, then change sound to system I and doing a scan.

I have exactly the same problem with my Shinelco 15" tv-dvd player. My manual came only in Italian so I have hard time tuning it. I get nothing when I autoscan channels with I/BG/DK, then there is L. I have no clue what these even are.
On the back of the tv there is coax plug but it is too loose the analogue cable, it only fits in rf in plug, whatever that is.

They are diffrerent TV standards used in various countries. I is used in UK, Ireland, South Africa, Angola, Hong Kong, and a few other places; BG is used in western Europe except France, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of SE Asia and the middle east; DK is used in Eastern Europe and French overseas territorites; and L is used in France.
BG, I , and DK are mainly sound frequency variations and if you choose the wrong one you will be able to tune in a picture with no sound. L is completely different and you won't be able to tune in either.

Changing the country selection is often more about changing the tuning range i.e. VHF/UHF etc but will also set the correct system letter. However this can usually be over ridden on a channel by channel basis for cross border reception.

The RF in connector is another name for aerial input and is where you should connect you aerial or cable TV feed.

Got through phoneline to manufacturer, comfirmed a "UK Build". Brought the TV back, got a refund (after small bit of haggling).

Old portable restored to former glory and picking up fab reception on rabbit ears. I will never doubt it again! (Until another fancy LCD catches my eye:)
