Are you sure that the tax disc determines it even in the eyes of the insurance company ?

If it is taxed as commercial it can only be a commercial. You cannot tax a private vehicle commercially.
You can however tax a commercial vehicle privately, ie Car derived vans.
But the tax disc is the determining factor.

It's just type of vehicle. Just jeep or van. It's how the system sees it. GF has been in the business a long time. Seems odd, but it's the way it is with Quinn and when she was in Spain.

Not so sure all insurance companies agree with you. I do however think you are correct..

All jeeps and vans are seen as commercial vehicles with Quinn. This is why they generally have a different policy (no breakdown assistance/ 3rd party extension) Found out that unless you have open drive, you are not insured driving someones jeep or van (insurance co dependant).

An insurance company will treat a vehicle as commercial providing it is taxed accordingly and has no rear seats (crew cabs excepted)

    .....

seems they deem it commercial regardless of how it is taxed if you remove the rear seats...

It would be interesting to ask them for commercial insurance on a vehicle that is taxed private

We would always ask if it's taxed commercially or privately and base the insurance on that. Another rule of thumb (aside from crew cabs) is the question "does it have rear seats or windows".
Generally it's based on tax though.
