    Hi folks.

    My cousin is looking at picking up a defender , most likely a 110.It'll be for weekend use mainly so he's looking at what teh situation is with commercialisng it as either a full van with just the front seats or maybe a crewcab if possible. has anyone done something like this and knows the ins and outs of what qualifies for what vrt band and commercial tax ? Will a 110 with just front seats and the nessescary done in the back qualify for €50 vrt or will it be 13.5% or whatever it is? Can they be crewcabed properly to qualify for lower VRt and tax ?

    Any help much appreciated.

    A basic 110 hardtop with no alterations pays €50 VRT and commercial tax. It is impractical to convert one to a crew cab as the way the body is constructed is totally different. If you want a commercial with more seats buy a crew cab or a utility station wagon. An ordinary station wagon can be converted to utility by removing the rear seats, changing the sides for plain ones from an 88" series Land Rover and putting a bulkhead in. It will pay 13.5% VRT and you may have to prove you are VAT registered and need the seats for employees. The only crewcab that pays €50 VRT is a 130.

    You would be hard pressed to find a 130 inch here, there far more common in the UK. Although I think the ESB used 130 crew cabs at one stage....

    Esb still use 130's but 110's are used more often.

    My brother in law bought one new in 05, his previous 02 one was rolled by it's new owner up in Wicklow playing in snow last year! They are pretty rare here alright and also command a bit of a premium in the UK, most SH are ex-utility. It's the only vehicle he reckons is any good to him, jap crew cabs he's tried aren't up to the job of carryng his tools and towing a 16' Ifor Williams.
