    Hey everyone.

I want to make some music, just for a laugh, bit of a personal project. id be mainly looking at the music styles of nine inch nails, post-rock, alternative/ alternative rock, with some prog and metal thrown in (forgive my over ambitiousness)

im not sure what pedals/effects to go for.

an ebow is on my to get list. so any advice? all suggestions appreciated :)

YOU MIGHT WANT TO START WITH A GUITAR ;)

As helpful and insightful as that comment is, you could get an approximation of a NIN synth sound with a fuzz pedal, a feedback looper, a tremolo pedal and amp.

I think you'd want to set yourself up with a distortion pedal or two - something really thick and fuzzy for NIN and post rock stuff, a lighter sort of distortion for the lighter sides of 'alternative' stuff, and then prog/metal stuff might require another sort of distortion, but you could probably cover a lot of ground with just two - a little gear and a little thought will go a long way :)

If you're listening particularly effect-y bands (and this is just an assumption), there's probably bits of delay and reverb and stuff in there? (I'm just guessing here). Could you give some more examples of bands you like? We could help more then!

If post-rock was Sigur Ros stuff, I know there's lots of fuzz and reverb (try putting a fuzz pedal after a big reverb, and then play with a bow [or ebow like you said!] - instant Jonsi!)

I don't know a whole lot of NIN, but from what I can remember (I've only heard With Teeth and The Downward Spiral), the guitar is a pretty straightforward sound, right?

    Well....

    an electric guitar
    a bass
    v-drums
    acoustic drum kit
    some percussion instruments

i think im okay for instruments =P

oh god there's so many bands.....

explosions in the sky, god is an astronaut, this will destroy you, blotted science, pelican, mastodon, cynic, muse, dream theatre, gojira, codes, tool, black light burns, kidneythieves, bat for lashes, meshuggah....

i figured if i got some helpful advice, i could try a few things till i got my own personal sounds

Well I don't listen to most of those bands... But there's a lot of info on the internet, a while spent Googling could be time well-spent!

    Explosions In The Sky

    God Is An Astronaut

Matt Bellamy (Though this is from 2000). Everyone knows about the trackpad dealy in his custom guitars that controls the Kaoss pad-alike (I heard it wasn't just a normal Korg Kaoss pad), and the guitar-mounted Zvex Fuzz Factory.

    This Will Destroy You

Seems to be lots of distortion, delay and pitch shifting!

Not necessarily! Try getting some pedals second hand! If you can live with a few paint chips, you can save a lot! And there are always clones, Behringer and Danelectro make great cheap pedals, with identical circuits to more expensive, 'boutique' pedals. The Danelectro Cool Cat Fuzz is a clone of the Frantone Peach Fuzz, Behringer do clones of a ton of old Boss and Electro Harmonix pedals, etc. And pedals have good resale value, so if you pony up for something expensive, take good care of it and you can sell it on later one when you're more sure of the sort of stuff you want. The first pedals you get won't be the ones you end up keeping! (Unless you buy a ProCo RAT, because they're brilliant and can do anything :p)
