how to sell a low value car in a high tax band

I've bought a new car and need to sell my old one, however although it is a great car its a 2.5 litre so very expensive to tax and I'm wondering how best to sell it.

Its a 1999 Mitsubishi Galant V6 with full service history, leather, air con, alpine sound system etc and a brilliant car but I'm afraid no one will want it because of the tax which will cost more than the car. Any ideas? Many thanks, Stan.

Tax is about a grand, how much do you want for the car ? Is it NCTd ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,940 ✭✭✭dingding

Someone might buy it as a hackney car. That would solve the tax issue.

you put a price on it and keep reducing until it goes...

forget what you paid for it, want for it, put into it, just have patience... sounds like a 500 quid car to be honest - any nct??

Unfortunatley you will be hard pressed to make decent money on it, although they are a lovely car especially when they are as high spec as your own, the tax and cost is simply too high for the majority of people who are looking for cars.
If you could hang onto it you would be better off, but if it will be left lying up and in the way not being used unfortunately you will have to let it go quite cheap.

    Unless you get lucky!!

sign up to the Irish Mitsubishi Owners Club
    www.irishmoc.org

Few guys there have VR4s they may be looking to do a manual conversion, or may be interested in the extras the car has like the leather etc.

thank you all - seems like really sound advice.

The NCT is out although it's taxed until end of March. I reckon I will get a new NCT but while I'm waiting for the appointment will try to sell anyway.

It also has new continental tyres, new battery and the timing belt was changed at the last service.

I just don''t want to have to put in too much time to selling the car as I am very busy with lots of other things so I will let it go very cheap. If any of you know someone who would be interested for an instant sale that saves me all the hassle I will sell it for €500 but other than that I will start at €950 and see how much I can get.

Does that sound right to you guys?

Unfortunately, this is where the punitive Irish Motor tax system comes into it's own.

Is the car an Auto or Manual?

Ya stick up a few pics, I know someone that might want the engine and a few bits so the whole thing for 500 is nice. Galway too.

I presume it's a saloon, if it were an estate I would possibly be interested. If you want shut of it quickly, you could put it on ebay with no reserve, let it run for a week.

You could sell it on a UK site, They don't pay import tax (I think) just a reg fee of £70-£80.

Have you compared UK values to what you might get over here.

I will get some photos done once the snow clears!

Yes it is a saloon and I imported it from UK two years ago. The car is in Dublin at the moment.

    thanks and happy new year.

New applicants will need to be 9 yrs old or less.

Existing license holders unaffected at the moment.
