Amazing Snow - Dublin Mountains 31/12/09

Parked near Ballinascorney and walked for a few hours uphill. Thankfully we only met one idiot in a range rover sport with 20" alloys and no snow tyres or chains so he was pretty much sliding all the way down the hill; some people think if they buy a 4x4 they will automatically be experienced and skillful drivers in wintery conditions:D
The pictures really can't do justice to how deep this snow was - you would be walking on drifts >8 feet tall (no exaggeration!) in places. Sometimes I sank right down through it too:eek: Certainly the deepest snow I've ever experienced. There were whiteout conditions at times when you literally couldn't make out the difference between the sky and the ground. Beautiful sunset to round it all off:)

Notice the little tree completely engulfed by the drift! Saw many scenes like this on the way up.

Looks like more snow than further east, I think we will need avalanche reports soon.

Great photos. I just posted a thread on Outdoor Pursuits about those that drive roads that are advised as impassable and have to get themselves rescued. Makes me kinda mad.

Excellent slideshow. Many brilliant shots. I like the trees in the middle of the field. They look as if they are huddled together to protect against the cold.
