    hi,
i'm looking for a program (hopefully free) that i can use for opening and mounting *.mdf files on a virtual drive.
the program needs to work on Windows 7 professional 64-bit version on a Dell studio.

I think you're looking for something like Alcohol 120%
    http://www.alcohol-soft.com/

it's not free but there's a trial version.
Deamon tools is another program that may be able to handle those files but I'm not sure about that.

You should know that .mds/.mdf files are disc images, you have to install software that creates a virtual dvd/cd drive(which will require a reboot), you then mount your file as if it were an actual cd. Be careful to un-tick the unnecessary software that they'll try and push on you.(ask.com/yahoo toolbar)

Hmm Daemon tools would be the best choice probably as its free :) Just untick all the toolbars & crap it asks you to install during installation :)

was checking out daemon but wasn't sure whether it supported mdf/mds files. is this the case. was also wondering whether winRAR would be able to open these file extensions like it does for iso files.

Winrar, if it can open them, will extract the files to a directory that you could then burn.*

*Disk images are generally used if the data needs to be run from a disk drive, so just running/opening it from your HDD is unlikely to work.

I use PowerISO, it may open .mdf's and .mds's. Its not free but there is a trial.
