Tonight between 7pm and 8pm there is to be a lunar eclipse. May not see anything with cloud cover but never the less may be a photo op. Got new 70 - 200 lens for Christmas and hoping to give it a bit of use tonight. Problem is I am total novice when it comes to settings etc. Any advice at all about what settings to use would be much appreciated. Any time I tried in the past the shots just look blown out and white.

As I say, any help appreciated. Happy New Year one and all.

tripod is virtually essential especially if the telephoto lens isn't one of those ultra-expensive sports ones.

once you have the tripod, you can experiment a little bit. Depending on the amount of light coming through, you might want a wide open aperture, or if its brighter, close it up a bit and expose it for a little longer.

so far I've taken a few snaps of the moon just now....low in the sky and crystal clear...fingers crossed it lasts :D

Took this a few mins ago, not the best quality as I don't have any good telephoto lenses. Hope it stays clear for the eclipse.

Have the tripod, Canon 50D with 70-200 lens with stabiliser. If it does not work, not the camera fault, totally mine............ Thanks for all the tips. Going outside now to set up and see what happens.

Don't forget to turn off the Image Stabilisation. With your camera on a tripod it is going to be steady. The IS will try to look for movement and compensate - ie your image will appear shakey

Heading out myself soon, just gotta wrap up though ;)

I've my camera set up outside the front door at the minute. Going to take a sequence over the next hour or so. Set on manual, ISO 100 f7.1 and 1/200 sec - looks ok on the back of the camera. Feckin freezing outside so just made myself a large hot whiskey while I'm waiting!

It's obviously not a full eclipse tonight as it's been more or less the same for the past half hour.

We haven't had any snow at all in Bangor or Belmullet :( was up in Newport and Mulranney earlier today and that was clear too. Although Nephin is still white.

Gutted :( got all setup, took a couple of test shots and then the cloud rolled over. The test shots are blurred to bits so not even worth posting. Very annoyed with myself for not taking more time to get ready.

The longest lens I have is a 70-200 so the zoom isn't great. Also it was my first time trying to shoot the moon.

    _MG_0240.jpg

    Full series available here.

As I said though as it was my first time trying it so I didn't really know what I was doing.

I really need to get a better lens as everything is very soft with the one I have. This is the best I could get of the moon last night
