Excessive Emissions light

A few months ago, the excessive emissions light on my dash came on. I brought it to the mechanic in my local garage and asked about the light. He asked if the car had mis-fired etc and warned me not to drive the car if it did becuase it could do all sorts of damaged. The car was driving perfectly and still is.

He checked out the error on the diagnostics but couldnt tell me what the code meant. He did confirm that the car had never mis-fired. He then gave me some fuel system cleaner and told me to fill the tanks and put the cleaner in and told me that if the light didnt appear within the next cycle (week or so) then all should be ok.

Last week, the light can back on in the car after filling the tank back up with fuel. I spoke to the mechanic about this and he told me that the cat converter is gone in the car and I will need to get a new one and it costs massive money.

Anyone else every had an issue like this? I just find it strange that he couldnt tell me what the problem was and now all of a sudden I need a new converter. He only looked at the car once.

VAG cars suffer from numerous sensor problems.

You really need to get the car hooked up to a diagnostic computer running VAG-COM software rather than throwing money on parts diagnosed by guess work. Your car's ECU will have an error code that can be read by the diagnostic computer and this will point you in the direction of the problem.

Either a VAG main dealer or a VAG specialist will have a diagnositc computer.

The guy didn't tell you what the code was? did he?
the light is an malfunction indicator lamp(mil).
What about warranty? I just get a diagnostic check done at the dealer or any good vag specialist
